For the second time in franchise history, the Montreal Canadiens have fired Michel Therrien as head coach and replaced him with Claude Julien.
Therrien was in the fifth season of his second go-around with the club.
The Canadiens own a 31-19-8 record this season but have lost their last two and are seeing their Atlantic Division lead diminish as they head into their ‘bye week.’
Julien was fired by the Bruins February 7 this year. He coached the Canadiens for parts of three seasons from 2002-2006, compiling a 72-62-10-15 record.

After his first stint with the Habs, Julien coached the New Jersey Devils before being hired by the Bruins in 2007. He was in his tenth season behind the bench for the Bruins.

The 56-year-old led the Bruins to their first Stanley Cup Championship since 1972 when they captured the league crown in seven games over the Vancouver Canucks in 2011.
They made an unsuccessful return to the Final in 2013, falling in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Julien won the Jack Adams Trophy as the league’s best coach in 2008-09 when the Bruins posted a 53-19-10 record and in 2013-14, he helped them win the Presidents’ Trophy as the best regular season team with 117 points.
While Julien’s tenure was highlighted by multiple playoff runs and a championship, the Bruins have missed the playoffs in the last two seasons, the only times they’ve done that since he succeeded Dave Lewis behind the bench.
Therrien led the team to Atlantic Division titles in 2013 and 2015 and an Eastern Conference Final appearance in 2014.
Last season, the Canadiens posted a 38-38-6 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since Therrien rejoined the team.
Therrien concludes his second stint with a 194-121-37 record. His combined 271 wins are the fourth most in Canadiens’ history behind Toe Blake, Dick Irvin and Scotty Bowman.
He spent four seasons as head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in between his stints in Montreal.

all kidding aside it`s a great move for the Habs, Julien is a great coach IMO..............wonder how long it`s going to take Julien to strip Pacioretty of his "C"

Habs fan here...I called this last Saturday.Terrien had to go...Julien could be a good fit & LONG overdue change.
Let's see if it lights a fire under the Frogs azzes, or they continue to choke like they did last year.

I don`t follow the Habs enough to pretend to know why they are obviously slumping. They have the best goalie and the best defensman in the NHL and that`s a pretty good spot to start them coming out of a slump. Therrien was touted as too strict and too ridged for the youth of the NHL even back a couple years ago............my sense is that he lost the room.

Subban was becoming bigger than the team.....getting more media than the team and that can`t happen in Montreal. That being said the Habs pulled off one of the great deals of all time........Shea Weber for Subban straight up was a huge win for the Habs, one I`m still scratching my head on....what was Poile thinking?

Therrien as never stepped up from junior B coach he always as a good season start but that's until other teams stepped up their game and that's where Therrien gets in trouble another guy that should go is JJd the defense coach he has no place been there they should go and get Larry Robinson

And one more thing they will never win the Stanley cup until the french media stop's deciding ho gets hired by the Canadiens manager i wouldn't care if the next coach speaks only Russian but no no no for the french media he as to speak french that to me is bull crap

yup I remember when they had Randy Cunneyworth a few years ago, the poor guy never got a chance, the media scolded him from the start because he could only speak english....

Management dumped Julien to save their own jobs last time . Julien's a great coach the habs gave up a draft pick for him way back when he was in Hamilton. He went to Jersey and did well was in first place when Lou took over to coach for a cup , stupid move that was. Its the old deal fire the coach if nothing improves its fire sale time. Habs have no scoring for 4th straight yr... I will never forget when the media ran Randy Cunneyworth out of town , what an ignorant group they are.

The Cobra

Media seems to run the show in Montreal......trouble is that the media cares about being French more than they care about the Habs. Habs management has bowed to the media onslaught before on occasion thru threatened boycotts etc etc....big mistake to allow the media that kind of power. Toronto media isn`t a whole lot different....they just love to see themselves in print so they create stories to get themselves heard....it doesn`t matter if it`s detrimental to the team or what.

Wonder how long it`s going to take Julien to strip the "C" off Pacioretty..............if I remember correctly it was Julien who bench Maxine repeatedly for not backchecking and floating. I`m thinking next season the Habs have a new captain, the right choice would be Weber if not Price who is their leader.....but wait.....Weber doesn`t speak French, neither does Price.. In the past the media has demanded the captain spoke French so he could talk to them in French thus shutting out Anglo speaking reporters. Pacioretty....I have no idea if he speaks French or not.
Still ....French or not.....Julien was the best man for the job and I`m sure the players are very happy to see Therrien pack his bags.

The Cobra
02-15-2017, 03:58 PM
And he's next....
Not so sure..........he got Shea Weber for Subban and that`s huge...not just for the obvious upgrade in defense but Weber`s ability to teach by example the young kids in Montreal how to play defense.
But you`re right....if the Habs don`t turn it around somewhat with Julien another suit will fall.

coaching (young) millionaires is a tough job ,,, a coach needs to wear many hats some of which don't
fit due to big heads !!

Firing coaches is nothing new and should come as no surprise ,, Tampa did it , Pittsburgh did it , Washington did it ,,
the Leafs do it every year

Once a coach losses the reigns the horses run wild

Colorado will want a ton for Duschene.........will Bergevin part with it???? because he might be a big part in the solution for the Habs going forward........I can see the Habs dumping Pacioretty in that deal.

Actually this makes a lot of sense, they get rid of the captain they dont want, but that price is very Steep, Duschene is a very good hockey player and will instantly make the habs cup contenders imo.

Exactly my thinking.....stripping a captaincy is never a good situation in the room......but if you trade him that`s another thing. Pacioretty can be marketed as an elite scorer and should fetch a decent return that directly can be used for an elite player that can score. I`ve said it before...Pacioretty is another Kessel playing for a better team. I doubt that Pac for Matt straight up would fly but Pac + at least would make one think.
Hey.....he got Weber for Subban.....still scratching my head there.

Here we have the Habs needing players/coaches but ownership is so overwhelmed by a fanatic media it seems they have to clear their moves with the press to see if they are acceptable.
Then in Toronto who are in sorry need of a #1 & 2 defense have a drill sargeant stuck in the 50`s for a GM who automatically eliminates 9 of the 10 best defensemen in the NHL ...........because they have facial hair and/or long hair????

The Cobra

Julien had his presser today...
Julien wants Habs to play ''with pride'' New Habs bench boss Claude Julien spoke to the media, and stressed that he wants his team to play with pride in all aspects of the game. Julien also feels that he is now better suited to handle the pressures of coaching in Montreal.

Hope that doesn`t mean they`re going to start that flopping around the ice begging for calls bit again.

It's sad to see that Claude Julien will keep JJD as defense coach till end of this season in five years has defense coach for the Canadians JJD didn't develop one single young defender in fact they all have taken a huge step back :Idontgetit::beatin_horse:
