By Jason Kim: World Boxing Council welterweight champion Andre Berto (25-0, 19 KO’s) will be defending his WBC title this Saturday night against former WBO welterweight champion Carlos Quintana (27-2, 21 KO’s) at the BankAtlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida. For the 26-year-old Berto, this is easily the best opponent of his six-year pro career, and the best, by far, of his title challengers. Berto hasn’t had it very tough since winning the WBC title with a 7th round stoppage victory over Miguel Angel Rodriguez in June 2008.

At that time, Berto had an exciting fight style which showed itself in the many blinding flurries that Berto used to throw back then. However, Berto’s fighting style has gone through a dramatic transformation since then, becoming much duller as Berto now mostly punches and immediately smothers his opponents with clinches to prevent them from throwing anything back at him.
Berto’s style of fighting is eerily similar to the way that 45-year-old Bernard Hopkins fought last Saturday night against Roy Jones Jr. The difference here being that Berto doesn’t go crashing to the canvas when being fouled and isn’t prone to fouling himself. However, Berto’s fighting style is painful to watch at times because it involves so few combinations nowadays.
Quintana, 33, is a tough opponent for Berto, because he mainly fights on the outside and boxes rather than tries to mix it up like many of Berto’s opponents have attempted to do against him. Quintana handed Paul Williams his only loss of his career, beating him by a 12 round decision in February 2008. Williams later avenged his defeat by stopping Quintana in the 1st round in June 2008.
Quintana has since won his last two fights, looking good in beating Joshua Onyango and Jesse Feliciano, winning both by knockouts. Quintana would seem to be the better overall boxer compared to Berto, and unless Andre can turn the fight physical and take Quintana out with something big, Berto could end up losing this fight.
Quintana is a tough opponent to beat when he’s boxing and moving on the outside, because he doesn’t stick around long enough to get hit. However, Quintana is susceptible to power shots, and has been stopped by both Miguel Cotto and Williams. Perhaps’ Berto’s best chance of beating him if he can load up with his shots and try to take him out with something bit. If Berto uses his punch and grab technique, he could wind up losing the fight by a lopsided decision because Quintana isn’t easy to get a hold of and is skillful at hitting opponents as they’re coming at him.
In other action on the same card, Celestino Caballero (33-2, 23 KO’s) will be moving up in weight to fight number #2 ranked WBA contender Daud Cino Yordan (25-0, 19 KO’s) for the interim WBA World featherweight title. The 22-year-old Yordan has quick hands, good power and a tough clinching style that is very stifling.
