FCC Full Speed Ahead!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Never mind that court ruling, says the FCC: It retains full authority to implement the National Broadband Plan.

In comments released after last week's inconvenient court ruling (wherein the FCC was adjudged NOT to have the authority to slap Comcast for alleged discrimination against certain uses of its ISP network) FCC Chair Julius Genachowski noted,“The court decision earlier this week does not change our broadband policy goals, or the ultimate authority of the FCC to act to achieve those goals. The court did not question the FCC’s goals; it merely invalidated one technical, legal mechanism for broadband policy chosen by prior Commissions."

At the same time the FCC has moved its deadline for public comment on draft rules for the open internet back again, this time extending the date to April 26, 2010. Needless to say, we're going to hear a whole lot more about who, how and what has any say over internet regulation. (For an interesting, more international take, on the mess, check out this article in The Economist.)•
