That used to be my job. It's a little unnerving having trucks go under you at speed with only 6" of clearance to bottom of bucket. During my 16 years with the Signal Dept. We lost 2 buckets like that, 1 from a truck turning corner then crushed between truck and standard. Finally 2 while stowed then hit large diameter low tree branches on side streets. The only time safety lanyards were really needed. You don't swing out over traffic unless absolutely necessary and then only with a spotter.
