When I first started at the mill the left over (core) was not used to make dowels. We would chip the core and the chips would be shipped to a paper mill. It was not until quite a few years later that we started to plane two sides of the core amd so there was 2 flat sides and 2 round side. Core was about 4 1/2" when dropped. Core was then hand stacked into piles. At that point these were now called huskies. We would then ship them to somewhere in Minnesota where they would be pressure treated and then introduced into the market place. Most common use for these huskies were in landscaping.

It's interesting for me to hear these stories from you guys in forest areas as I am originally from Yuma, AZ with nothing but desert and I now live in Tijuana, MX which is mostly desert too. A little greener. It's good for me though as at 76 I can't stand cold.
