Don't know much about transmissions but I know there is something wrong with mine but it never bugged me enough to care. But now I am board and want something to do. :tehe:

Anyhow, I know there is something wrong because when I start my truck and start driving away it won't shift gears. When this happens which is every time I leave the truck sit for a while then take off. To get it to change gears I just shift it in to nutrual for about 50 feet or so and then put it back into drive.
Then it shifts fine through the gears.
This started about 2 years ago, it started out only once in a while. Now its every time.

I was thinking of buying a new Tran because I can get a new one for like 950 bucks or so, but for all I know my tran just needs a 40 dollar replacement part. lol

One thing I did try about a year ago was tran fluid/filter change.
Didn't change nothing though.

What ya guys think?
Thx for the suggestions.

Could be as no-one suggested, cabling but I have a feeling that your bands are slipping in your trans. and since you have ran it a year you are probably going to need a new trans.

BTW, does shifting to reverse then to drive cure the problem? If so, it is probably the bands.

Since is an old tranny you can do what I have done and if there is nothing broken inside it will work but I also warn you, if this works and solves the problem it also means you need to rebuilt or replace the tranny.
Drain all the tranny fluid out in a clean bucket, remove the tranny's pan, change the fluid filter and new pan gasket, all the used fluid put it back IN the tranny, It has work for me if and only if the bands are still good, if it doesn't work then like it was said before, the bands are all out...................

without more info on what type of truck it is, ( year ,make & model),it would be immpossible to help you diagnose the prob.....But with the price of new trans oil...why would someone go thru the trouble of draining the trans oil changing the filter and pan gasket, then use the same dirty oil.If the oil is not burnt or smell bad ..its not the bands..it could be something as simple as a modulator valve or an electrical solenoid,or on newer trucks the trans control unit.It would save alot of time to have the trans professionally diagnosed.

Sorry for not replying sooner guys.
I generally visit here every day but I must be dropping the ball.

The Tran is 4 speed. It does have the Kick down cable.

Over the weekend I did notice a few things that might be more clear.
When I first start my truck it idles high until it warms up.
If I let it warm up and put it into drive it drops in nicely and I don't have the issue. If I don't let it warm up and drop it into drive the truck will buck.

If the truck bucks into drive I know it won't change gears properly and will have to do the N - Drive trick.

The weird thing is if I don't let it warm up and put it into R it does not buck.
Never bucks going into R Only bucks if going into Drive.

(So my newest trick is to start truck. Put in reverse and let the motor idle down as its now under-load, leave it there for about 5 seconds and then quickly put it into drive so it doesn't buck.)

Lol. My truck is funny.
