That's what the early explorers said, they thought the bison looked like the African buffalo so they called the North American bison "buffalo".
They are distinctly different animals. The proper name is bison, we don't have true buffalo in North America.

Similar to our indigenous people being referred to as Indians. Columbus thought he arrived in Asia so called our native people Indians.
