On Craiglist someone is selling his jet powered VW. The engine is a General Electric T58-8F helicopter engine. The engine spins at 26,000 rpm and produces 1,350 horsepower, and only adds 300 pounds to the curb weight.

some folks have to much money and time, looks nicely done, but doubtful that it could ever be street legal to much noise and pollution imagine having to smog check that every year, and really how much fuel would be required to go down the road

C/P -- just HAD to check on this one --- LOL

The original VW Beetle wasn’t exactly the fastest vehicle on Earth, but it would get you where you needed to go.
The revitalized water-cooled version reborn 20 years ago added a modicum of performance, but that wasn’t enough for this doctor of engineering — so he bolted a jet engine to his. Now you can buy it on craigslist
It’s hard to imagine having a better explanation for why this thing exists than the one the owner himself offers, but we’ll summarize it here for you.

Essentially, this New Beetle is the creation of mechanical engineer Ron Patrick, whose chief modifications to the car involved cutting a hole in the rear of the hatchback and fabricating a custom structure to hold the new turbine engine.
That’s a General Electric T58-8F, by the way, originally meant for a helicopter, but tweaked by the good doctor with some internal modifications and a custom tailpipe (we’re assuming it’s a lot more complicated than that). The engine spins at 26,000 rpm and produces 1,350 horsepower, and only adds 300 pounds to the kerb weight.

This isn’t his only creation — the man’s also built a scooter with two jet engines mounted to the rear like saddlebags, making for a miniature DC-9-shaped ride.

The Beetle is “street-legal”, meaning it was probably registered and insured before the jet engine was added. Getting it certified for the street now might be a little bit of a challenge. However, if you’re up for it, it’s for sale for a whopping US$550,000.

Can you image being at a stop light and a idiot behind you hooks there horn and you put the brakes on and throttle engine up.I think they will need a new paint job.
