For those who are interested in such things, the entire reason the Hollywood sign was erected in the first place had nothing to do with the movie business. It was put up by a real estate company in 1923, who had created a new housing development in the Hollywood hills, called “Hollywoodland”. It was only meant as a temporary advertisement for the new community. But it instantly became the signature icon of Hollywood in general and was left up permanently.
It was originally studded with over 4,000 lights that would illuminate it at night and would flash in the sequence HOLLY—WOOD—LAND.
Over the years it deteriorated significantly until the Los Angeles City Parks Department stepped in and had it restored with the stipulation that “LAND” be removed. They’ve maintained it ever since.
