every year there are hundreds of houses that are destroyed by nature, wind, seas, fires, and the insurance companies require NEW lumber to rebuild, that helps drive the price up, there are just so many trees out there to be cut, you see recently built house hauled to the dump, now there is a lot of good lumber there just thrown away, give that waste to some organization that will pull the nails and recycle all that GOOD lumber, i can remember helping my grandfather straighten nails to be reused, we have become such a throw away society, example how many good computers are thrown away every year because microsoft or apple now longer support the operating system? i know i have a few that work very good but are outdated

You make a good point Gates07, we are a waste society

and a greedy one too ,, one would think that in todays world of big machinery, automation and robotics, the cost to reproduce the lumber would have decreased -- but today it's more about profitability and pleasing shareholders than decreased prices.

But, maybe you've got something there --- a business built on recycling wood --- why not ?
we already recycle cardboard and electronics

A couple of the local big box hardware stores in my area sell old recycled barn wood,(all sizes) it's a bit costly, but the wood is sometimes around 100 years old, in some cases you can get 2 inch x 20 inch wide planks, some come with bullet holes, and some you have to use a metal detector on to watch out for those old nails.

I did a whole wall book case for someone out of this wood, they wanted an old stressed out look, they got it.
