His name was Tom Dunn. He lived in Ireland his whole life, but wanted to see what better opportunities America had to offer him.
He decided to make the trip, promising his mother he will write to her every day and that she should come visit him when he is all squared away. “I’ll be the President of the United States, Mom!” He told her.
Well he leaves and a few weeks go by, but the mother never hears from him.
Luckily, another Irishman is set to be taking the same journey in a few days. The mother asks if he can search for her son, under the name Dunn, and tell him to write to her. “He surely will have been the President by now,” promising it will be easy to find him.
So the Irishman gets to America, fascinated by Ellis Island. Where is the first place he goes? A bar, of course!
When he gets in the bar, he asks the bartender how to get to the White House. The bartender isn’t too sure what he means, and since he is used to foreigners coming off the boats, he assumes he means the bathroom. “Over there,” he points in the direction.
The Irishman thanks him and goes inside. As he enters, there is a man just finishing up.
“Are you Dunn?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Write home, your mother has been worried sick for weeks.”
