I'm trying to use a mobile hotspot in the rv for IPTV but it buffers too much. Ookla shows a good download speed (20 - 30mb) but the ping is high, 130 - 180.

Will a high ping prevent me from using IPTV? I have no problem using the hotspot for prime video.

The ping is a measurement of how long it takes for a round trip on a special data packet sent to another computer, and its return, it may cause problems, the true thing to look at is the jitter on the connection, jitter is the measurement of how much latency on a data packet is on the connection, if the jitter is too high it can cause real problems.

Here is a good test for this...And it describes jitter.

Using a VPN can also cause your problem.

I ran your test several times, always comes back with different values but the jitter isn't too high, just the ping is quite high.

Jitter 4 - 10 ms + or -
Ping 160 - 180 ms

I'm not using a VPN.

What band is the mobile hot spot on, 2.5 or 5 ?? And is it close to a cell tower??

It's dual band, I have used both. I'm about 4-5 miles from the tower.

Are there others around you using the same hot spot?? If so then it could be too many users on the same channel(s), try the program below, it will tell you whats in your area.

https://www.acrylicwifi.com/en/downloads-free-license-wifi-wireless-network-software-tools/ Try the WIFI home version.

I used it and found that AT&T's WIFI (from their cell tower) was blanking out the 5 GHz and 2.5 GHz channels I was using for my HDTV, I changed WIFI channels on my router and the problem went away, there may be other channels you can use, you will find out after a channel scan.

No others using the hotspot.

I'm afraid all this networking stuff tends to be a tad over my head

OK, more questions, is the hot spot your using right at your location? Or is it further away? If further away then it could be at your end, the WIFI signals are a two way street, you may get a good signal coming in from a hot spot location a few hundred yard or miles (guessing) from you, but most WIFI sticks and home based routers are only in the 200 mW output range, this may not quite be enough to get a good connection back to the hot spot, what are you using for the WIFI at your end??

I should have given more detail about what I am trying to do....

I got this NETGEAR Nighthawk M5 5G Mobile Router from maplewifi.com. They advertise unlimited usage at 30 - 80 mb download speed.

I thought this would be great to use for IPTV when I am away from home in the RV.

I have been testing this in my house and it works great for internet and prime video but won't play smooth video from my Buzz receiver. Constant buffering.

I'm in eastern Ontario and this box connects to a server in California.

Are you using a VPN to connect with, and can you not connect to a server closer to Home ?

No VPN.

The SIM card is an AT&T card and I assume it points to a California server. (My knowledge is limited on these things).

Finally got the VPN loaded in the Buzz. Live TV has stopped the buffering so it's looking good so far. This thing might work after all. I'll have to try it for a couple days and see what happens when the weather gets bad and the cell signal degrades.

Maybe I should try a paid VPN that gives me more options???
