rail roads use to employ a lot of workers, not anymore, i think there are still 2 persons in the front engine, they want to make that only one, very dangerous, if that one person has any medical issues there is big problems, there use to be a caboose that had 2 workers, they got rid of them years ago, so what happens if this 2 mile long train has a problem and blocks all the cross traffic going thru small town usa, there is no one to disconnect the cars anymore, emergency vehicles and others can not cross the tracks, and the reason there are these train hits a vehicle, they have to cross the tracks, in europe and other places the trains are elevated or the roads are elevated, so there is no collisions but that cost money, but it also makes it safer, i can remember having to wait at least 1/2 hr to cross the tracks when a UP freight train waited for a go signal, there use to be a lot of train tracks not anymore

Trains now days use what is called a "Dead Mans handle", the engineer has his hand on the throttle, if he lets go the train will go into shut down, the engine is shut down and breaks applied.
