And at an average of $15 to $25 a pallet, (today's market) that's one expensive burn.

I have seen some nice stuff built form pallets. In a county in Missouri there is no building codes and I have seen a house built from pallets. Not the main supports but everything else furniture kitchen cabinets. It was nice.

Those Blue Chep pallets are made with hardwood Lumber, they are approx. 55-70lbs or better when soak-in wet
I know because used to make them at a Pallet Plant I worked at when I was 18, They called them "BACK-BREAKERS"

I work at a pallet place also.Small pallets could be made in a minute. The back breakers were the ones to mount air compressors and big motors etc for shipping with 8' 4x4's and 2x4's.
