The Cincinnati Zoo posted on Friday night that their Corpse Flower, nicknamed Morticia, had began to bloom.
The zoo obtained Morticia from the Cincinnati Botanic Gardens in 2019. The flower only blooms once every 10 years or so, and you have about a 24 hour window to see it.
Saturday morning we booked it up to Cincinnati from Lexington, KY to try to get in right at opening to see it, not realizing just how popular the flower would be.
Luckily, we only stood in line for half an hour to see the flower, which did indeed smell like a bag of rotten garbage. By the time we left the zoo several hours later (after making sure to grab a few slices of LaRosa’s Pizza, and seeing Fiona) the wait was easily over two hours, stretching back nearly to the entrance of the zoo.
Interesting tidbit: near the entrance of the building where the flower lives, we kept noticing more and more flies as we got closer. Turns out, they are attracted to the smell of the flower. I saw several flies hovering in midair, looking almost like they were frozen and unable to move yet still suspended in the air, which is a phenomenon I’ve never noticed and was very odd.....C/P
