View Full Version : HD8000 not turning on

I recently got a hd8000 from eBay. The green power light keeps flashing and the fan keeps trying to spin but stops.

This process keeps going on forever, no video, no front blue led text.

I looked at the power supply visually and don't see anything unusual.

Is this thing done for?

I see possibly 2 fat caps but the pic angle isn't the best.If it has an 8psk installed, try removing it as well as all external cables & try again.Short of that, use a dvom to measure the various outputs on the power supply. The values are marked on the board.

Looking at them far left plugs they look like it may have gotten wet or hot by the looks of the board.. around the plugs..

If you're refering to Danmarco, I don't see him on ebay anymore.

Danmarco has retired from the FTA hobby/fixing stuff since I last talked to him which was a while ago

If your going to be poking around on that power supply board with it plugged in be VERY VERY careful as that's a switching power supply, it has some very high AC voltages on it, you could wind up crumpled up against the wall wondering how you got there.

And yes several caps do have a distinctive bulge to the tops, also look at the bottoms. If you don't think you have the skills or the equipment to replace them then find someone that does.

I agree 100 percent. Not worth getting hurt or further damaging your situation.
As much as it sounds like power supply, I would still verify.

of his Red HD boards he did, still have 2-HD Boards kicking around, if someone is Looking for one.

I can't find my multimeter, need to keep looking. I could measure the voltage at 12v, 3.3v and 5v. Also can read capacitance.

I was just wondering if this sounds like a power supply issue.

To rebuild would it be better to replace all caps on 12v, 3.3v and 5v? Or is it normally just 5v and 3.3v that go bad?

If all I need to do is remove a bunch of capacitors and solder new ones, I can do that. I message the eBay seller to see what they want to do first but otherwise it seems better to just repair this power supply.

Caps are by far the easiest component to replace.Be aware of the values & polarity. You can go higher with working voltage (if there's room on the board) but not capacitance.I have done a dozen or so now & never had a repeat failure.Use the guide Auggie referenced & you will be fine.

If you plan on Repairing the PSB/capacitors etc. one other thing you probably should do as well is Add "COOLING MEASURES"
Heat is a Killer to these FTA Boxes & the Cheap Components that are installed, I got myself a set of USB Powered "Fans"
that sit on top of my boxes sucking/blowing air in/out keeping them Nice & Cool.

I got a bunch of heatsinks and fans from all my PCs so I will add those once I fix the power supply.

Just waiting on seller to see if they're willing to do partial refund or something and I'll buy a capacitor kit and get to work.

I'll keep everyone updated, thanks for the help all.

Thought I'd provide an update. I replaced most of the capacitors, but I still had three 470uF ones left to replace and a few others. I think I replaced all the 3.3v & 5v ones.

The receiver still doesn't work but it's in better shape than before. The power LED flashes faster now and I did see the blue "booting" text on the front display, then it turned off. Hopefully after the last few capacitors it'll be working.

im thinking if you replace the last three it will boot right up. remove the HD module and see if that makes any difference

Capacitors arrived today around 7pm so didn't have a chance to finish the job, hopefully tomorrow.

Ironically, my 2nd HD8000 arrived (I ordered this a week ago when I was told I was going to have to ship back the broken hd8000 but it ended up in me getting a refund so now I have two).

Only problem is, I don't have any remote for these. Is there no way to scan a sat without remote?

If not does anyone have a spare remote? :bawl:

Is this the correct remote? Listing said sv1000 but I’ve owned sv1000 before and it doesn’t have the black trim. Looks like hd8000 remote. Cant be 360 remote either since it doesn’t say 360 elite or premier.

If you want to see what the original remote looks like you could download the manual in the file section. Black and white but an image of the remote. There were some originals to be had years ago but they have since been bought up.

Has to be a 8000hd remote to work "ALL" the Functions etc.

Just because I tried one for the premier for a brief time and nothing seemed to function. One could navigate the menus with the front panel buttons. Problem from my read is moving down to the sat scan options in the dish setting menu. Need the use of the color coded buttons on the remote. Tried a few different ways with the buttons but came up empty for the short time I messed with it.

Thanks everyone, I did order that one from eBay and it's coming Monday. I may need one more remote so I will let everyone know who PM me if I need it.

The HD8000 I fixed rebooted yesterday but has been solid again today. Idk if I need to do anything else to it.

I do want to do a clean factory flash on them both and install latest file.

I was going crazy because I have a dn1000 on the roof as well I realized and decided to see if it works. Found out the green psk board on one receiver isn't getting any signal.

Switched to repaired board with red psk adapter and I have signal. Lots of time wasted trying to troubleshoot lol

i wonder if your box with the green board needs to be configured to the dish. does it have the jumper coax on the back? and also check and see if the A-1 board is selected in the settings.

Yes it has the cable in the back. Interestingly, I saw quality for a split second multiple times when I was trying to find signal but right now with repaired box with red a-1 board it works fine. With second box green board no quality and strength is very low (10s vs 50s).

It is selected in settings, shows up as Q-board vs A1-board on the red box.

Well that remote I bought was a waste of $$$.

It looks 90% like a hd8000 remote but what I didn't see was it's missing the record and pvr buttons. It looks like a sv1000 remote but with the black trim. Maybe it was for pvr1000.

So none of the functions work....lol

I'm surprised there's no way to reprogram these for different models

The Sonicview Remotes are not inter-changeable for their receivers, plus you have to remember
How old the SV8000HD is, I am amazed that it is Still Operational to this day since support dried up Long a Go

I really like the UI of the SV boxes, otherwise I would have went with a TBS USB DVB-S2 tuner for my pc and share to all pcs in the house.

I have a few HP iPAQ PDAs with Nevo remote software I still use til this day as a universal remote. It doesn’t have codes for SV and requires learning from the original remote

On your 650, is the SV8000 already supported out of the box? If I were to get a used one do I need anything else to make it work?

I haven't had an SV running for 2 plus years, but as I recall they worked without having to learn from the SV remote:the harmony software worked, including the coloured function buttons.

I'm assuming wording difference in the software due to the two piece module from jump. The Z was a typing error in the software that was corrected later. Again my assumption. Quick read on an old satellite board the two piece module was referred to as a Q-board and sub board. Long module that stretched about the whole width of the inside of the stb.

The A-1 board was a ADD-ON for HD when Turbo 8-psk was put in place a while back
The green boards that came with the sonicviews were basically for SD & OTA (OVER THE AIR) I Believe ?
But some of the Green ones are HD/Turbo capable cause I have one in my SV8000 that does HD etc. (custom built)
