You need to plug it in the first outlet next to the switch ,, :comfort1:i also made the same mistake ;)

You need to tie a knot in the power cord first, this slows the electricity down enough to let the light come on first, the electricity is getting to the switch first, this makes the power bar think it's on and it auto shuts off, this keeps the light from coming on.

Oh by the way you didn't let the smoke out of it first did you??? No smoke no light.

I know that if you let the smoke out it won't work
let the smoke out of some caps years ago and had to get out the braid

Once you let the smoke out, it's hard to put back in. So much of these electrical/electronic stuff runs on smoke.
