sit atop an abandoned lighthouse on a Pacific Northwest island off-limits to humans
In 1995 the lighthouse was taken off shore power supplied by an undersea cable and was powered solar panels arrayed on the tower itself and on large racks at the base.
Construction of the 94-foot tower was completed and the beacon first began operation in 1891. The first fresnel lens stood 147 feet above the waterline and was visible to ships up to 24 miles away. The lighthouse was automated in 1968 most of the buildings used to keep the island habitable for its caretakers and crew were razed shortly after.
Only a handful of outbuildings remain - the oil storage buildings, fog signal building, and water tower - all in surprising good condition considering their proximity to relentless ocean wind and seawater.
In April 2008 the lighthouse beacon was turned off permanently and control of the island handed over from the US Coast Guard to the US Fish and Wildlife Service.Originally named Isla de Dolores by Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra of the Spanish Navy, it refers to the massacres of his crew by the Quinault (kʷínayɬ) People as they explored and claimed territory for Spain in 1775.
It was renamed Destruction Island by George Vancouver in a clerical decision.Despite not being allowed to set foot on the island, piles of man-made garbage in the form of plastics and flotsam wash ashore and accumulate on the western beach, evidence that human activity continues to have a dire and reaching impact, far beyond the places we physically occupy.
