not sure its the software on the box version 7.1.2 cannot be updated

that isn't the software version
that's the os

I have no problem installing APKs on my xpl3000. As long as you use the arm7 version, you should be fine.

If you are getting parsing errors, either the apk is corrupt, the apk is for the wrong platform, the apk is designed for only newer Android versions, or you are out of storage on the xpl3000.

What app are you trying to install ? You need to get the proper version for your box.
