The Great Green Wall is an international initiative to create a belt of trees and fertile land across the Sahel region of Africa. The Sahel is a dry region on the edge of the Sahara Desert and is one of the poorest places on Earth.
The Great Green Wall aims to:
[*=center]Increase arable land
[*=center]Help people and nature cope with climate change
[*=center]Stop the Sahara Desert from spreading
The African Union resolved to build the Great Green Wall in 2007. The wall was originally planned to stretch 8,000 kilometers (5,000 miles) from Dakar in the west to Djibouti in the east. The project was to be completed by 2030.
As of 2023, about 18% of the target has been restored. The project has experienced delays, unfulfilled promises, and poor coordination.
Ethiopia had the most success, planting over 5.5 billion seedling since the beginning of the project.
