I have an ongoing problem with recording.

Ever since I got this box the recording is unreliable. Sometimes it will record the entire show but usually it starts recording and then stops at some point. It varies, sometimes only a few minutes are recorded, sometimes it records for much longer and then stops.

The same issue occurs with different media... hard drive, USB stick....

What gives?

(U5, 32g)

try watching what you're recording to see if it gets interrupted/freezes

Also, please provide your firmware version and IPTV Software version. Both can be found on the "Updates" screen.

And are you using a MAC, XC or M3U type login ?
And does your provider allow multiple connections ?

When using USB stick, have you tried formatting the USB stick in exFAT filesystem, using a PC first (instead of formatting it on the box) ?

Yes, it also happens while watching.

Version 5.0.891
XC login
Yes - multiple connection
Yes, I tried exFAT too.

If it freezes the recording will fail

I'm quite sure it happens even without a freeze.

Doesn't take much. Even a micro-freeze can often kill a recording. And often it is just streams that are not even continuous.

It's like the good OLD days of CD burning. A buffer "underrun" would kill the recording. Welcome to the digital world. And when CD blanks were $10 a pop, they were expensive coasters.

Nothing would stop my VCR from recording crap, signal or no signal :)

So I guess the only way to get a reliable recording is to dust off the old DVD recorder. LOL

pretty much, any Glitch in the Whole System/Setup etc. will put things out of whack for recording anything

that's why I don't bother to record, to many Screw-Ups

That's sad, I wish it would keep recording regardless of freezes and glitches. Is this something Buzz could fix?

I've recorded dozens of shows no issues.
A lot of servers run fairly freeze free

It's weird. I am recording right now and had a three second freeze and it's still recording.

Are you sure about that ? My U5 is presently on .906.

From LiveTV, if you press the Menu button, you will see the version on the bottom left of the menu. Can you double check ? If you are still at .891. from the menu within LiveTV, if you go into Settings, you can find a "check updates" option. Try to select it to see if it gives you the latest update.

It is software, so surely if can be fixed. However, having said that, it would be a redesign on the way the recordings are done, so no small feat. I find recording will vary drastically from one IPTV provider to another. Some seem to change out streams regularly (which causes glitches), and others seem to be pretty stable.

I rarely do any recording on my U5 or even my xrs4900. Nowadays just about all TV shows or even special events are available for viewing online within minutes after it is a aired. I guess the only real exception would be something like live sports (which I don't want much anyhow).

nope
and most time that happens is because source changes
so now it won't match recording file name which causes it to fail

live tv/menu/settings/check updates

LOL. I just finished recording an hour long show - the REC indicator was on. Now I go to the PVR screen, click on the show thumbnail and it says no recording found. :tehe:

In configuration options, do you have the recording destination set ?
Sounds like your recording destination is either faulty, badly formatted, or suddenly ejected. Are you using a mechanical HDD or an SSD ? Mechanical HDD tend to overheat in the compartment under the U5, and will sometimes "disconnect" because of it.
When I used a mechanical HDD on my 4900 (quite a while ago) it would do strange things. Switched to an SSD, and it fixed the issues I was having. Mechanical drive, in a tiny compartment with no ventilation. Drive won't survive long.

Also, the fact that your unit is not updating to .906 is strange.

I have an SSD installed.
