By Ryan Dunn: Emmanuel B. Villaruel, reporter for the Filipino newspaper The Freeman, recently spoke with Manny Pacquiao at his suite at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino. Pacquiao was in Cebu City with his family for Father’s Day, his first visit to the city since he was elected congressman. From what we can glean, Pacquiao had some very clear thoughts on a potential mega fight with undefeated American boxer, Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

“Kung 50/50, seguradong madayon ang away,” said Pacquiao. (“If it’s going to be a 50/50 split, the fight will definitely push through”) As to the actual state of negotiations? “Karon wala pay klaro. Dili man siya mosukol,” added Pacquiao. (“Right now, it’s not yet clear. He’s afraid to fight me.”)
Where this puts things in terms of the grand scheme of the negotiations, I’m not sure, but the alleged demand from Team Mayweather for a 60/40 split in favor of Floyd has been less than amenable to Pacquiao and more/less rejected by him and his handlers. As BWAA Fighter of the Decade, three time Fighter of the Year, and Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound champion, they must believe they are an equal draw.
The debate on comparative analysis with regards to PPV buys is a slippery slope at best, tainted by whichever fighter you choose to make a case for. The bottom line is that the negotiations seem to be active, and both sides are remaining relatively quiet. Time will tell where the dust settles, and whether we have a fight on our hands come this November.
