The severe beating of a St. Catharines man which has remained unsolved for more than a week has prompted police to employ a new arsenal of weapons — Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
The Niagara Regional Police major crime unit plastered cyberspace with information Friday about the assault which has left 35 year old Adam Duguay clinging to life in hospital.
It's the first time the major crime unit has used the social networking and video websites.
The move is an effort to reach the peer groups of their suspects — two males and a female believed to be between 16 and 21.
"It's that group we don't always feel we connect with," said St. Sgt. Brett Flynn, who heads up major crime. "It's another effort that way."
Besides the Twitter and Facebook sites, the service's video unit retraced the steps of the suspects for YouTube, giving residents an on-the-street view.
"It's certainly a changing market for us," Flynn said. "I don't think the conventional means will ever fall off for us, but I think it's opening up a new portal for us to get it out there quickly as well."
Police said the three suspects were walking on Raymond St. near Midtown Plaza beer store just before 1:30 a.m. on Friday June 18 when they became involved in a dispute with Duguay.

The dispute continued as the group walked east on Raymond St., left onto Clark St. and crossed Welland Ave., moving north on George St.
Police received several calls about a fight in the area of George and Louisa Sts. and arrived to find Duguay on the ground unconscious with severe head injuries.
Paramedics took him to St. Catharines General Hospital in critical condition where he's been in intensive care ever since.
Duguay's parents made a plea to the public earlier this week to come forward with information. They've been at the hospital every day hoping for any sign of improvement in their only son. Duguay has massive head trauma.
Police said the suspects were seen running east on Louisa St., then crossed Catherine St. and ran through the overflow parking lot and field at St. Catharines Collegiate. They ran north on Woodland Ave. to Railway St., crossed Geneva St. and were last seen near Ottawa and Dacotah Sts.
Police believe the males may have shed some clothing as they ran and are asking anyone in the area who found discarded clothing or other items to report them.
The males were white, with shaved heads or short hair. They were both wearing dark, long, baggy shorts and possibly white shirts.
The female was white with dark hair pulled back, possibly in a pony tail or pinned. She was petite and was wearing dark clothing.
Flynn said if the web tools reach their target, major crime may use them again in the future.
"For us, it's going to be a case by case basis," he said. "If it fits the purpose, we have every intention of, now that it's up, being able to post things quicker to get information out there faster."
