Despite many games failing to sell out, FIFA has announced total attendances at the World Cup have passed 3,000,000.

The majority of World Cup games have failed to sell out.

After the Germany-Spain semi-final, 3,057,000 people had attended 62 matches - an average of 49,134 - with three games left to play. The figures place South Africa third in terms of total and average, behind the 1994 (USA) and 2006 (Germany).
South Africa's matches had a potential total capacity of 3.42 million but few matches have totally filled stadiums. Critics claim FIFA's figures inflate the actual crowds, with attendances at some group-stage games disputed.
There were some empty seats at the second semi-final as five planes, carrying about 400 fans, were unable to land in Durban as the airport was overcrowded. When they eventually arrived the supporters were given police escorts to the ground but most arrived after the final whistle.
