TORONTO -- Highly touted Venezuelan teenagers Adonis Cardona and Gabriel Cenas have signed contracts with the Toronto Blue Jays, extending the club's aggressive pursuit of international talent.

Deals for the two 16-year-olds are believed to have been reached a while ago but weren't announced until Tuesday.

Reports suggest Cardona signed for US$2.8 million while Cenas fetched $700,000. Both will begin their careers playing for the Blue Jays in the Dominican Summer League.

Cardona is a six-foot-four, 180-pound righty whose fastball already tops out at 93 m.p.h.

Cenas is a six-foot-one, 175-pound third baseman who has a strong throwing arm and may hit for power.

These deals follow the Blue Jays' April signing of highly sought after Cuban shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria for $10-million over four years.

They also were among the final bidders for another Cuban, left-hander Aroldis Chapman, who signed for $30 million over six years with the Cincinnati Reds.
