LAS VEGAS -- If undefeated middleweight Daniel Jacobs claims the vacant WBO middleweight belt in Las Vegas on Saturday, he says he'll be taking it home -- not to New York, the amorphous amalgam of five boroughs, but to one of those boroughs in particular. Specifically, Brooklyn.
"I'm from New York but, when you're from Brooklyn -- that's our country," he said with a smile after a Thursday news conference at the Mandalay Bay. "If I could make a flag for Brooklyn, I would. That area has a lot of culture, and it's rich in boxing history. When Luis Collazo fought Andre Berto and he lost, the last thing that came out of his mouth was still 'Brooklyn.' And that goes to show you, when you're from Brooklyn, you've got to rep, and you've got to perform, like it's your last fight on Earth."
Asked to define what sets Brooklyn apart, the charismatic Jacobs called it "swagger."
"You can be from Manhattan, you can be from Queens, but when you say you're from Brooklyn, people are like, 'You're from Brooklyn? Allllright.' It's just a wonderful feeling, being from Brooklyn. Every time I go in the ring, I have something on that says 'Brooklyn.' I let everybody know I'm from Brooklyn. So, they know what time it is. They know I'm special."
