On Friday, in his native Argentina, the new “Malignaggi” Cesar Cuenca (37-0) continues his snail pace up the 140lb rankings against Cesar Telechea (8-3-1). With fights like this its not hard to see why Cuenca has 37 wins yet is nowhere near world level.
We also see a super featherweight alphabet title fight in South Africa between Mzonke Fana and Cassius Baloyi. This could actually be a pretty decent fight, especially as they have already fought. Interesting fact here is that both have fought Malcolm Klassen– Baloyi lost by KO while Fanna won a SD. Baloyi then beat Fanna on points. This could be one of those weird round robins where one fighter has the other ones number every time they fight.
Antonio Escalante also returns to actions after his FOTY candidate against Miguel Roman with a 10 rounder against Edel Ruiz. Escalante will be wanting an easy night, we want a Roman rematch.
Former Lineal and alphabet titlist, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, is fighting Felipe Romero. Gonzalez has shared a ring with RJJ, Clinton Woods, Dariusz Michalczewski, Montell Griffin and Tavoris Cloud. Hopefully he’ll go out on a win against the supremely overmatched Romero. who is an amazing 7-4-1. Anyone else noticing the theme here?
Luckily, we conclude this week’s action with a HBO BAD card. For some reason the double header looks very intriguing. It shouldn’t be Glen Johnson is forty one. Despite looking good last time out, it was against Yusaff Mack. No offence, but he is not Tavoris Cloud, who seems to be on a collision course with the Pascal-Dawson winner. But we all know Glen. He is as stubborn as hell, has wonderful conditioning, and a huge heart. Never count the Road Warrior out.
Also on that card is the 140lb match up between Devon Alexander and Andriy Kotelnik . Alexander will be looking to further solidify his claim that he is the best 140lb fighter in the world and continue his path to Amir Khan or Timothy Bradley. Kotelnik is hoping to wash away the one-sided boxing lesson Amir Khan dealt him in his last outing. In a sense, it’s a crossroads fight as Alexander has to win, and he has to look good doing it otherwise he may be pushed to one side in favour of Khan, Bradley and Maidana, while Kotelnik has to win to stay relevant.
I should also mention that, on the same card, Cory Spinks is back in action this week against Cornelius Bundrage for the IBF 154lb title. This one is sure to be a cure for insomnia.
