By Jason Kim: Heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (28-2, 25 KO’s) will be looking to revive his sagging boxing career this Friday night against Manuel Quezada (29-5, 18 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout for the vacant World Boxing Council FECOMBOX heavyweight title at the Citizen’s bank Arena, in Ontario, California. Arreola, 29, has lost two out of his last three fights after starting his career out with an impressive 27-0 record with 24 knockouts. Arreola was stopped by WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko in the 10th round last year in a failed shot at the big Ukrainian’s title. Losing the fight to a fighter as talented as Klitschko was one thing, but losing to a cruiserweight Tomasz Adamek in Arreola’s last fight is quite another.

Arreola looked fat and out of shape in his bout against Adamek last April, losing by a 12 round majority decision. The fight appeared winnable, as Arreola was able to stagger the shorter 6’1” Adamek on a couple of occasions. However, Arreola appeared to tire out in the later rounds of the fight and was out-boxed by the quicker Adamek. After the fight, Arreola complained of injuring his left hand and said it prevented him from throwing power shots with it. Arreola still looked awfully tired and his physique had the look of someone who had taken off a lot of weight in a real hurry.
Arreola was rumored to have started training camp for the Adamek fight weighing in the neighborhood of 300 pounds. Arreola weighed 250 for the Adamek fight, which means that Arreola would have taken off an incredible 50 pounds during training camp. After the loss to Vitali Klitschko, Arreola had said he was going to dedicate himself to conditioning and keeping in condition. It didn’t look like Arreola has been keeping his weight under control by the looks of his physique in the Adamek fight. Never the less, Arreola is still ranked at #9 WBO, #10 WBC and #12 by the IBF.
However, Arreola can’t afford to keep losing like he’s been if he wants to stay ranked in the top 15. He’s got to start winning again, and keep his weight down. The good news is that the 32-year-old Quezada is coming off a 10 round split decision loss to journeyman Jason Gavern in his last fight in April, and would appear to be tailor made for Arreola. Quezada doesn’t move much and should be standing right in front of Arreola for the entire fight and there to be hit. Arreola needs to shine in this fight and look to take on some of the top contenders in the division so that he can get another title shot.
If Arreola can’t control his weight better than he’s been doing in the past couple of years, he’s not going to have much luck in getting a shot against one of the Klitschko brothers and/or WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. Arreola needs to be around the mid thirties and in shape for him to succeed in the division.
