Workers continue to look for survivors

August 19, 2010 — A severe storm in India turned fatal after the roof of a school collapsed Wednesday.
Heavy rains in northern India claimed the lives of at least eighteen children on Wednesday.
A school in Sumgarh, a small village in Uttrakhand state, collapsed during a period of heavy monsoonal rain. Eight children were pulled from the debris alive while rescue teams continue to search for other students and teachers trapped beneath the rubble of the single story building.
Officials believe there were around 37 people inside the structure at the time of the collapse. The severe downpours were also responsible for several mudslides earlier this week.
This monsoon season has been a heavy one for parts of the country. A cloudburst earlier this month caused heavy rains, which led to flash floods that took the lives of 175 people in the remote region of Ladakh.Monsoon season typically runs from June through to October.
