A buddy just gave me a two year old acer laptop (and I didn’t have to do anything sexual for it ) anyways it has two partitions on the hard drive and I would like to convert it to just one partition and it’s fat32 so I would like to convert to NTFS . how do I do this and can I do it without having to download software ?
thanks

Are you installing windows to it? If so, that would be your best option for repartitioning and formatting the drive. There are many ways to do it though

Is the current operating system XP? (or other?)

If it is then the second partition may be your factory installed system recovery/install files, all your mother board, I/O cards, video drivers and other stuff for that laptop may be on that partition, in formatting the hard drive to 1 partition you will loose the drivers for those devices, unless he gave you the system disks you will have to go to the manufactures web site and down load a bunch of stuff.

Installing a new OS will not replace those drivers; you need the system disks or the drivers for that unit before doing a format.

Just browse the web and get a old Win98 boot disk software, then boot from it and type fdisk, then just read the instructions and delete all the partitions on the hard drive....after that just insert the XP or whatever the operating system you want to install and let it go....
