i don't ever remember seeing a warning like you posted.

sounds like your system may be infected.

my first question is why did you do a system restore?

you must have had an underlying problem to begin with.

the following are my personal suggestions and others may disagree.

i would suggest shutting down and pushing F8 during boot to go into "safe mode"

i'm not sure trying an earlier restore point would help as your restore points are usually a target to perpetuate the infection.

running your av and anti-malware software might help. if it does you should turn off your restore settings to dump your other restore points.

i would suggest backing up everything you want to keep (you may need to slave your drive to another or run a "live" operating system disk to access your files) and reloading your operating system if possible.

as i say these are my opinions and what i would do for my own systems or for friends and family.

The system restore will give you this message as part of the normal restore process. However, it sounds as if it hung somewhere along the way. Did you initiate the system restore, or did your OS do it because of some error?

i don't mean to nit pick but system restore and using restore disks are not quite the same.

i recently "fixed" an hp laptop.

it used F11 at boot to access the restore partition.

the problem is you get all the bloatware that hp is known for.

after that i downloaded the sata drivers and used nlite to add them to an xp sp3 image i had and after reformatting again all was well after that (well i used some driver disks to finish the job!!). yes i know you are using vista but the methods are still the same.

i agree with memnoch6_66 that your system has hung up.

give it another go.

it gets kinda confusing now.

the more i check around the more i see posts that say ntldr is not a part of vista.

so there are suggestions about upgrading from xp, dual booting and a setting in the bios that stops writing to your mbr.

so...was your computer originally shipped with vista?

did you set up for dual boot to run xp and vista?

is there a setting in your bios that prevents writing to your mbr (master boot record)? that could explain the system hanging up.

maybe posting the model and other particulars could help one of us to give you better advice.

i would have thought the disks were bootable and with the error getting into windows wasn't possible.

but that is good info for me.

thanks 81!

If you have an HP computer then you read the instructions from HP on using HP Backup and Recovery Manager in Vista as per the following link(replace hxxp with http):

hxxp://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c00809678&product=18703

The article is for the Vista OS but there are links for XP and Windows 7. Read the instructions thoroughly before proceeding with anything. If you have a HP system and it came with a Recovery partition then you should have made a set of recovery discs.

If you need to access files on the hard drive then one method is to use a Linux Live CD. If you are interested, I can tell you how to do this.
