BoxingScene.com's Jhonny Gonzalez reported earlier today that WBA 154 pound champion Miguel Cotto had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder last month and that there is a possibility that the Puerto Rican will not be able to fight again this year.
Cotto is tentatively scheduled to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on December 4th in either New York or Las Vegas. If Cotto is unable to go, Alfredo Angulo would be more than happy to step in and face Chavez Jr. Angulo's promoter Gary Shaw told BoxingScene, "fights with Cotto or Chavez Jr. were both at the top of our wish list. If Cotto can't go then Perro would love to fight Chavez Jr."
Shaw realizes that an Angulo-Chavez fight is unlikely. "Top Rank seems to be only interested in matching their fighters in house. If they have a change of heart I would make the fight in a heart beat."
The promoter believes that the fight would be huge and would do good attendance figures in many different locales. "That fight would be big in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Texas or Mexico. If they (Top Rank) were to want the fight we could hold it at a number of different venues."
Shaw doesn't believe that Cotto will be in a rush to fight again this year if the report of the surgery is accurate. He doesn't see why the three division champion would take that kind of risk and especially if it means shortening his training camp. "If Cotto did indeed have surgery last month I don't see how he could be fighting again this year. Why would he fight again if he can't have a full training camp? I don't think he would risk not having his shoulder heal properly."
