Google has come out with free calling within Canada and US with a gmail account. I have tried it and works great.

Google has certainly struck a chord with phone users, chalking up more than a million calls on its new Gmail voice service in its first day of operation.

The service lets Gmail users in the United States and Canada make free calls from their computers to phones - both cell and landlines - in those two countries. Calls to other countries vary in cost from a low of two cents a minute to 99 cents a minute.

Google tweeted about the huge response to its new service.

It was just announced yesterday morning and Gmail users reported varying success accessing the new feature. It didn't immediately appear on all Gmail accounts. I asked Wendy Bairos Rozeluk, Google Canada's communications representative about the delay and she emailed back to say, "yes there can be delay in activation."

So if the feature hasn't shown up in your Gmail account yet, it likely will soon.
