Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr may soon decide to preserve his unblemished professional record in boxing and let go of the opportunity to make $40 million and more by not facing pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao next year or even beyond.
Despite the unprecedented clamor from boxing fans for Mayweather to heed the call Manny Pacquiao to give public the fight they all want to see, the undefeated boxer chose not to respond, fueling speculations he is worried about losing his precious "0" to the current pound-for-pound king.
The two greatest boxers of this generation have attempted twice in over a year to face each other in the ring but their respective promoters failed to agree on certain terms of the fight ranging from drug tests to disagreement on fight purse.
Mayweather has all the rights to decide on what to do with his career or how he intends to manage his profession. His desire to preserve his unblemished boxing record should not be taken against him. It is a very valid decision in order to maintain his marketability.
A great majority of boxing fans from across the globe have been criticizing Mayweather for not being man enough to heed the call of Manny Pacquiao to settle the issues inside the ring.
Mayweather chose to refrain from issuing any more public statements that touch on boxing. Marketing professionals are saying he is doing the right thing
The more he talks about issues other than boxing, the more fans becomes hyped and even agitated on his continued silence, which is actually working in his favor.
Recently, Manny Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach have said they still want to see the dream fight happen next year. But Freddie Roach seemed resigned to the fact that Mayweather does not really intend to face Pacquiao for the simple reason that he might lose his "0."
Pacquiao, on the other hand said, he has agreed to almost all the original demands by Mayweather but he thought they were not the real reasons why he refused to sign up.
Pacquiao has earlier said he wants the dream fight to happen in order to give the people, especially the fans, the kind of fight they want to see.
In a recent radiointerviews.com statement Freddie Roach commented on Mayweather's reasons for not signing up with Pacquiao.
“I think he just wants that zero on his record. As long as he’s undefeated he can argue and say he’s the best fighter ever, he’s as good as Sugar Ray Robinson and so forth, and he can make that argument as long as he doesn’t have that loss on his record. I think it’s more important for him to stay undefeated than fight the best guy out there.
"It’s a shame and I hope the fight will happen but I’m worried about that because the only thing that can get him motivated is money and they offered him 40 million dollars. If that’s not enough money I don’t know what is.”
While it is true that $40 million is a life-changing amount of money, Floyd Mayweather should not be blamed or subjected to public ridicule for what he thinks he needs to do to chart his boxing career.
Mayweather has recently been ridiculed by a great majority of boxing fans, calling him "chicken," "duck," "coward," and other unsavory names.
And for not reacting to these uncivilized comments, the undefeated boxer somehow earns the respect of people who understands the way he is trying to chart his own career in boxing his own way.
It is true that his father has thrown a lot of trash to Manny Pacquiao which led to the defamation lawsuit but in fairness to the undefeated boxer, he has managed to keep his cool lately on the steroids and other issues and for doing so he should be praised.
Still, the public clamor for the dream fight to happen next year continues
