A National Disgrace....
Every once in a while I hit on something that makes me nuts and drives me into a rant-----tonite I came to the end of my rope.
I live in SW Ontario, every since my trusty Maggies have been shelved by N3 I`ve been subjected to watching Cogeco Cable---punishment enough for many of my past sins. When turning to the channel guide for Cogeco you get this little commercial area in the top right corner---here in SW Ont every second commercial on this guide features Anne Murray singing "you needed me" with a run of pics of starving 3rd world kids trying to collect cash for CCF Canada to be sent abroad---this commercial has run for mnths now and I`m sick from it and of it.
Some jackass organization committee in Canada in their ultimate wisdom has made the likes of Anne Murray a national treasure of sorts (I have no idea why) falling just sort of the "mountie", the "beaver" and the "igloo" image that we seem to be proud of broadcasting about ourselves when we have done so many more things worth noting than bragging rights on Anne Murray.
These are the facts my friends...... I wrote this piece a couple years ago while in a rage at seeing one of these commercials at Xmas time. It was just after the Feed The Children org. had got busted for fraud and embezzlement. ( and leaving an open buffet as part of Sally Struthers contract).
I have not changed my views to this day and never will-----I will be the first to stand in line with an open wallet for all these poor, starving, helpless children-------right after every child in Canada and the USA has been fed & clothed.
Once again I was appalled and disgusted to read the number of Canadian children living in poverty has risen----the number is 637,000!!!! At this time of year we are constantly bombarded via TV with images of those poor children all over the world covered in flies and virtually starving to death--my heart surely goes out to them. These various organizations constantly ask us for $$$$ which have a nasty way of disappearing in transit or are gobbled up by "costs" incurred by administrations, corruption and the like. So most of us feel helpless in helping these poor kids & their families----however if I may suggest we can do something to help our own children as over the last 20 years the federal government has done virtually nothing but "study" the issue. I hate to seem heartless to those in third world countries but my attitude is --take care of our own first and then help abroad. We as simple Canadian citizens can surely put a huge dent in this outrageous situation and while we`re at it design a program to rid our country of this disease called indifference. We can do it in our own community family by family privately without fanfare or the hustle of politicians trying to grab the limelight. There are many local organizations that help the poor----not many ask for $$$.
For over 20 yrs now myself and my children have donated 1 new xmas gift a piece as well as food, clothes, and a ton of old toys (good condition) to organizations that distribute them to needy families. It costs me nothing--it will cost you nothing----------------maybe thru a little redistribution we can help do what our politicians can`t be bothered with.
There are many large, successful companies in Canada and the U.S.---how many of them would send an employee to walmart or a grocery store to buy a ton of toys, food & clothes and distribute them accordingly to local outlets with any fanfare etc. just to help those in their local community who are having a difficult time in simply sustaining life itself?
I hope I haven`t offended anyone with this piece-----but the reality of our situation demands immediate attention-----As much as we`d like to fill the stomachs of every child on earth and put a smile on each one of their faces, rid the world of disease, famine etc etc----we can`t, that`s reality. Charity begins at home and as soon as we citizens start taking care of our own, the faster we can help others less fortunate.
I honestly believe that 2 great counties like the US and Canada could muster up enough successful companies to feed our starving, homeless population without the bull of involving politicians with their open hands and empty pockets. These successful companies could donate directly to the people in need on a personal level from city to city, town to town and village to village.-------for starters why don`t we as citizens challenge the insurance companies of Canada for a direct donation-----after all they are the richest among the mega companies in Canada and the US----and God knows we all donate to them monthly---time may be now for them to give a little back instead of giving themselves a seven figure bonus at Christmas---just an idea..it`s a start.JMO
