Mine seems to work very well. I've got a cable modem well right now. Been having some issues with vista and staying connected to the internet. But as long as you have a good connection works as good as a land line imo.

we have one here in Canada and sent one to in-laws in UK.
we rarely use it as they can call over here to our landline with theirs.
but i still use mine for long distance in north america and think it works great.

Doesn't like the call in function, on DN sub receivers. But works enough to keep the $5 charge from being applied if you don't have a phone hooked up. <br />

I use majic jack on cable if you have a good high speed connection it is the way to go. My only problem with them is after a year it is hard to renew the majic jack, my guess is to sell more majic jack. Either way it is worth it in my opinion.

MJ Rocks, high speed internet and the faster the computer the better, if you have the means hook up a computer just for the Magicjack, as for overseas calls use a long distance card (I use chi chi) around the holidays ie Christmas the airwaves get allitle busy and you can get a Canadian prefix for $40, best invention since sliced bread.

The downside with MJ is it doesn't fax very well. You have to slow your fax speed down if your unit has that option. I went with Net Talk which is $100.00 but never needs renewed and runs a fax with no problems. Just google VOiP and make a choice.

Ive had mine for over a year and just renewed for 5 years for $70. Yes you can't beat the price, but in my experience can't beat the quality and clarity. Destroys any cell phone quality and surpasses any landline as well. They also have amazing online support.

My opinion is not to buy magic jack in canada (Canadian Magic Jack). That company is a total fraud.I had it for 1 year with their ATA box system and I could not receive calls and the connection was really bad.Once this company has your money they will never get back to you for any reason. They never call back their messages and I think by there accent there from the UK.I even file a complaint to the RCMP and the CRTC.But the American Magic Jack,is another story! It's night and day!The connection is almost perfect, the renewal is easy and they even let you know in time. All their feature works and we use it as second line abd,of course, long distance. They only thing that I reproach them is that they don't have the ATA box by linsky.Your computer has to be ON all the time.ATA box is a device that you connect in your routtor to your phone. It replaces the computer,so it's on all the time.Make sure you buy US Magic Jack.Go for it it's cheap and it works.

Im not sure what that member means either. I got mine through magic jack.com and then got my parents one through a satellite store in Calgary (in person). Both work flawlessly, and any support Ive had to get for either one online has been amazing. So overall in my 2 experiences, I am most pleased. Also note I've had both hooked up to a little PC laptop as well as a mac.

I have high speed cable through shaw and my parents have the 'light speed; through shaw. Thats the step down from high speed (but not dial up)and all works great.
I chose a US area code cause I didn't care if I had a canadian area code or not. For my parents though I think it was an extra $10 when you regisiter your number for a canadian area code.
I know that all there requirements for the magic jack to work are on their site magicjack dot com. For example minimum isp speeds in their FAQ section (I do not know off the top of my head). Ive always found just about any answer to any question there. And if not, you can go online to talk to an online agent to ask any questions you may have.

I've been using one for about six months now in Ontario Canada. I purchased it at a electronics retail store for $39.95 plus $10.00 for a Local Canadian phone number. The price included one year service. The only problem I had was I am using it on my laptop and when I first used it the caller ID was not working on my phone and when some one called there was one long ring then it rang normal. My computer had only 512 mb of ram so I purchased an extra gig. After that no problems it is as clear as a land line.

funny... yes, it works with enough bandwidth and the computer on -completely on, not sleeping, hibernating, etc. Yes, the sound is good. But I thought a phone was meant to allow people to connect when ever needed, at night if emergency e.g.
And for that simple purpose, the magic jack is not a phone. It is great if you are away from home, a neat help... but it does not replace a normal phone. Skipe 2 would be a perfect name.

yes I wouldnt want to us it in place of a landline or cell phone but it does make a good 2nd line, and a way to avoid long distance
a couple of drawback is 911 and if your power or internet is out so is your phone service
something to think about in an emergency
Everyone I know personally that uses MJ swears by 'em. This includes users from the Middle East, UK and Caribbean. However, one recent call from a Caribbean user to one of my landlines sound like poop. The NPA showed up as a "347" # (which is usually a NY cellphone a/c), and caller was using MJ, but it sounded like poop.

I have to use the onscreen display...I have tried 4 different phones and can't use the phone keypad to make calls. MJ couldn't figure it out, any ideas? I have 3 mg local cable modem.
Is MJ usage still dependent upon an always on PC? And does heavy disk or cpu activity muck up connections and/or call quality?
Also, can/does QOS settings on routers increase call fidelity?

Besides the dialing issue mine works ok I tend to get a lot of lagging at times but that could be related to the old pc running the device.

ive had magic jacks for a few years now and they definitely do the trick now that htey have canadian numbers its been better. i sent them to my kids in different cities in ontario as they are students and you pay 2 years at a time and they dont have to worry about a monthly bill and they also have no excuses for not calling their mom. i use to pay about 50bucks a month and figured i'll get rid of the long distance plan which is only like 20bucks a month but figure it out after 3 months the magic jack and yearly cost is paid and now its gravy for the rest of the time, i mean its nickels and dimes but its still 180bucks'ish a year. At the end of the day it just goes to show how the providers really stick it to the people and we need to see more of this so the cost of things can drop

iCall gives you free voip - landline/cell calling, only restriction is calls are limited to 5 mins at a time, you also get free voicemail and your own access code so people can call you as well
I just set mine up last week and it works well
the 5 minute thing might turn people off but for someone like myself that only uses a cell, it's good to have as a backup vs actually paying for something such as magicjack
google icall to find the site
there is a fee they want, is that $9.95 a month or a year?

Mj has started blocking a lot of numbers with rural phone companies. Read about it at the unofficial MJ site...

New toy on the market is the nettalk duo which connects thru your router so the PC doesn't need to be on all the time. A little more expensive but they have a 50% off code til the 15th. Ordered one a few days ago.

it s free, but if you pay the fee then the 5 minute call restriction is lifted, and you get an actual phone number instead if an access number (with access number the other person calls a generic phone number, then has to enter your specific 7 digit access number to reach you)
the price might be different if you're not in the US but I think it's $10/month which is a bit steep compared to MJ but I'd never pay for it, the limited free service is fine by me
just google it and try the free version if you need to make an emergency phone call (such as calling your cell to hear it ring if you happen to lose it, or if your cell battery dies, etc)
its not a very good phone replacement but in an emergency it'll do
thanks for your post, man

As much as I like the MJ, I have recently noticed the toll free number issue mentioned by Montesa. They used to work, but don't seem to be lately. So... if you make a lot of toll free number calls, you might want to reconsider. I've recently also noticed problems calling TFN's on my cell phone too (Bell Mobility). Has anyone else had any problems?
I use gethuman.com to locate alternate phone numbers to businesses that sometimes bypass the automated robo-answering hell they all use these days. Also helps locate TFN numbers that still work with my cell phone. Another useful tool to know about. Darn shame everything has to be so complicated anymore.

When I plug in the MJ drives G and H appear in my computer, when I click on drive H it has a format option but when I click it it says insert disc. Drive G when right clicked doesn't have the format option...

Go to magicjacksupport dot com and do some reading. It is magicjack that is blocking a LOT of numbers...got my nettalk duo today and had it up and making calls in 5 minutes and GREAT call quality. I'm very satisfied so far and since it plugs into your router the PC doesn't need to be on for it to work. They have an official forum at nettalk dot com/forum. They also have a 50% off code good til Nov. 15...NTLKCRZYDISC. You have to order online to use it.

I just called my magicjack from my telus line as well as a rogers line and both called no problem. My parents also call it all the time!

Been using the TK6000 (I got mine when they were selling them instead of the duo) and after a shaky start (you had to unplug it and plug it back in from time to time) it has preformed well. I have unlimited for life, because I was one of the first to give it a try, although 29.95 a year is still a great deal. They had a black Friday and cyber Monday deal... two for one. I started to buy a couple just in case my TK6000 goes out, I would have a backup. I gave my MJ to my brother, I never used it after I got net talk.

Just wondering if anybody has had a problem with magicjack rebooting lately. In the last two or three days it reboots about once every hour or so. I tried the online chat on their tech support and they gave me a link for an upgrade. I tried that and about an hour later it rebooted again. I have had it for about 8 months and until now no issues.

no problems on my end.
Do you have another computer you can hook it up to at all?
Maybe there is a glitch coming from your computer

Thanks for the reply wes block. I only have the one computer but the mj only rebooted once since I did the upgrade. It's been a few hours now hopefully its calmed down, if not maybe I will try to reinstall it.

see what happens and if your still having issues, see if you can take it to a friends and plug it in and see what happens. If it does it on 2 computers go to the MJ online support and tell them whats going on. Im sure the will replace it for you. I had one replaced (different reason). but they will want you to try everything on your end to ensure its not a faulty jack.
Let us know what happens

Thanks igore and wes for your help. I checked my power options for my pc and it was set to shut off the hard drive after 5 min so I set it to never. It hasn't rebooted all day so I'm not sure if that was the cause. If it happens again I will try the file, it a good thing to have handy anyways

My Magicjack works on my Crappy DSL line that has a speed around 110K. I just can't surf the net and talk at the same time.
