Polish-born former light heavyweight (175 pounds) and cruiserweight (200 pounds) champion Tomasz Adamek, of Jersey City, N.J., will return to his adopted Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Dec. 9 against Vinny Maddalone of Queens, New York.
Adamek (42-1, 27 knockouts) will be after his fifth straight victory as a heavyweight, and his 12 consecutive win since being dethroned as WBC light heavyweight champion by Chad Dawson in February of 2007.
Main Events CEO, Kathy Duva has announced that Adamek-Maddalone will be televised on pay per view.
"The Adamek-Maddalone fight is now set for Thursday, Dec. 9th at Prudential Center in Newark," said Duva, whose fighter, Adamek, who won the IBF cruiser weight belt by split-decision over Steve Cunningham in December of 2008, and defending it twice.
"Thursday night isn't perfect, but if you recall, Adamek's first appearance in Newark versus Cunningham, which was broadcast on Versus, took place on Thursday, Dec. 11, and we did very well," said Duva. "Tomasz is much bigger now, so we are optimistic that it will be another big night in Newark."
The 6-foot-2 Adamek is coming off of last month's unanimous decision over Chicago-born former world title contender, Michael Grant (46-5, 34 KOs), of Blue Bell, Pa., who, at 6-7, and, 261 pounds, represented the largest rival that Adamek has faced.
Adamek weighed 217 pounds against Grant.
Maddalone (33-6, 24 KOs) has been stopped three times during his career -- once in the third round by four-time heavyweight king Evander Holyfield, and, once each in the seventh and 10th rounds by Brian Minto.
In victory, Adamek would look to challenge Ukrainian-born, IBF IBO and WBO king Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs), his older brother, WBC titlist Vitali Klitschko (40-2, 38 KOs), or, WBA champ David Haye (24-1, 22 KOs) sometime next year.
"Our goal for Tomasz is to have him fight for the title against either Haye or one of the Klitschko's sometime next year. It is too early to predict which one of those three he will fight first because if he beats the first one, he'll just keep going," said Duva.
"Also, at this point, I have no way of knowing if we will be able to make a deal with one of them for Adamek's first quarter 2011 fight," said Duva. "At the rate that he is going, though, Tomasz will be the mandatory for at least one, if not more, of them by the second half of 2011."
