Top Rank Promotions' Vice President Carl Moretti confirmed Thursday's BoxingScene.com report by Rick Reeno that former two-time world champion Kermit Cintron (pictured at right) of Houston is being considered as an HBO televised potential replacement for Julio Cesar Chavez of
Mexico for a Dec. 4 bout against WBA junior middleweight (154 pounds) champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico if Cotto-Chavez does not come off.
Cotto (35-2, 28 knockouts) would face Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs) in the main event, and Chavez (40-0-1, 30 KOs), New Jersey's Pawel Wolak (27-1, 17 KOs) in the co-feature that is likely for New York's Madison Square Garden, or, according to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael, Atlantic City.
On Tuesday, Moretti told FanHouse that nothing should be made of the fact that Chavez Jr. had not yet gone to the Philippines with WBO welterweight (147 pounds) king Manny Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach to prepare for Cotto.
Pacquiao (51-3-2, 38 knockouts) is with Roach, a four-time Trainer of the Year, preparing to face ex-champion Antonio Margarito (38-6, 27 KOs) on Nov. 13 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium for the vacant WBC junior middleweight crown and Pacquiao's eighth title in as many different weight classes.
Chavez was initially set to accompany Pacquiao and Roach, but has not yet made the trip. Wolak was initially slated to face Chavez in September, but Chavez, believing the Cotto bout was too close behind it, pulled out, leaving Wolak with a replacement in unbeaten, Armenian-born Vanes Martirosyan (28-0, 17 KOs) of Glendale, Calif.
Now that Wolak is back in line to face Chavez, however, Martirosyan's opponent is unclear, even as BoxingScene.com also has reported that Armenian-born WBO king Sergei Dzinziruk (37-0, 23 KOs)) is a potential opponent for Martirosyan.
