I knew from the time Golden Boy announced this fight that this would be a horrible match. Showtime is smart not to be involved in something like this.
This is what boxing has degenerated to - matches that do not matter. If Sergio Mora "had too much respect not wanting to hurt a hall of famer" (that was his excuse), he has no business being in boxing. Period. He waited until the 11th and 12th round to start throwing punches....and salvage a draw to the great dismay of the crowd.
But did it really matter?
I enjoyed The Contenders and the match that gave Sergio the million dollar payoff but there hasn't been much to cheer about "the great pretender", or is it "the Latin fake"? Sure, he had a great match against Vernon Forest, splitting the two contest, but is there anything anyone remembers about Sergio Mora? With only 6 KO's in his resume, no one was expecting a miracle last night even when he decided it was time to turn on the heat.
Larry Marchant was not mincing his words when he said that he would not be anywhere close to another Mora fight. SERGIO NO MORE!
But what about Mosley? He is in the twilight of a brilliant career. If there is anything that proved something last night, it is that it is time to hang up the gloves. The dream of a future big payday all dissipated last night. Perhaps it is all his fault. He was the aggressor and tried in vain to penetrate the latin fake's "brilliant" defense. Had Mora given this fight the kind of business ethics one engaged in this business is expected, perhaps there could have been some excitement. There was so much hugging in this match that they could have been dancing with the stars for all I care.
This is one boxing match that Dana White could be screaming: "See, how boring boxing can be?"
At least there were some great undercards. Frankie Gomez lived up to his reputation as a brilliant prospect in knocking out his opponent. Victor Ortiz announced his return to top form by destroying Harris.
"El Cannelo" may have KOed Carlos Baldomir to add to his impressive resume but there was little excitement in his performance. I doubt that he would have succeeded the same way had he faced a 25 year old Baldomir.
Halfway through the main event last night, I was switching channels looking for something to cheer me up. Halle Berry in Swordfish could have done it. Cameron Diaz, Penelope Cruz, or Nicole Kidman may have been more exciting to watch. Hell, Sylvestre Stallone in Rocky XXX would have been much better than watching SHAME MOSLEY and SERGIO NO MORE last night.
