Dish Network Could Lose Fox Programming

TVPredictions.com
Washington, D.C. (September 8, 2010) -- Dish Network subscribers apparently are facing the possibility of losing some Fox programming networks on October 1.

Some local Fox affiliates are now posting notices at their web sites saying that Dish may stop carrying Fox Sports, FX and National Geographic on October 1. And the satcaster could stop carrying the local Fox affiliates on November 1, the notices say.

If an agreement is not reached, it would mean that Dish viewers would lose everything from Fox's new fall season to regional sports broadcast by Fox Sports channels to Sons of Anarchy on FX.

While neither Fox or Dish Network have issued press releases, the notices would indicate that the two companies are having trouble negotiating a new carriage agreement.

Battles between TV providers and programmers have escalated in recent months with programmers asking for increases to carry their lineups. In June, Dish was forced to drop four Disney high-def channels when it could not reach a new carriage agreement with the programmer; the channels are still off the air.

Fox Pulls Dish Network Warning
Washington, D.C. (September 10, 2010) -- Fox has pulled a warning notice at a local station's web site suggesting that Dish Network could lose all Fox programming over the next two months.

Earlier this week, WDFW-TV, the Dallas affiliate for Fox, posted a page at MyFoxDFW.com that said Dish may stop carrying Fox Sports, FX and National Geographic on October 1. And the satcaster could stop carrying the local Fox affiliates on November 1, the notice said.

The notice was picked up by Google News, and subsequently, written about here at TVPredictions.com. However, yesterday, the Dallas station pulled the warning notice page without comment.

It's possible that Fox and Dish Network have made some progress in talks to reach a new programming agreement before October 1. However, it's also possible that the Fox station in Dallas posted the warning notice prematurely and then pulled it when TVPredictions.com published an article about it.

If an agreement is not reached, it would mean that Dish viewers would lose everything from Fox's new fall season to regional sports broadcast by Fox Sports channels to Sons of Anarchy on FX.

Battles between TV providers and programmers have escalated in recent months with programmers asking for increases to carry their lineups. In June, Dish was forced to drop four Disney high-def channels when it could not reach a new carriage agreement with the programmer; the channels are still off the air.

This would also have a negative effect on NHL Center Ice and NBA League Pass because a lot of the games are Fox Sports feeds.

Looks like they started it. FX and NatGeo are still on but a lot of the Fox sports channels are showing a press release in the epg stating that those channels are no longer available.

D*SH subscribers are short on some key sports programming today as FOX has pulled its 19 FOX Regional Sports Networks and other programming. Says a release from D*SH, "FOX is demanding a new contract with an unprecedented rate increase of more than 50 percent. FOX's removal of the channels follows the programmer's national TV, print and web advertising campaign designed to intimidate DN and its customers into paying the rate increase. FOX has flatly refused DN's request to allow customers to continue to watch these FOX channels during the negotiations."

Said FOX of the dispute, "At midnight on Sept. 30, DN decided to no longer carry Fox Networks cable programming. The proposal we've offered D*sh is fair and in line with the tremendous value we provide."

Local FOX TV stations, FOX News and FOX Business News are not affected by the blackout.

In addition, D*ISH is without MSG and MSG Plus programming, which means no live coverage of the Knicks, Rangers and other NY teams for New York area sports fans. Said MSG of the dispute, “We are disappointed with D*SH’s decision to drop MSG Network and MSG Plus. D*SH has rejected numerous fair and reasonable proposals at rates, terms and conditions consistent with our deals with other operators."

Looks like it's gonna be a long, hard fall for renewals .... •

Why is Fox Sports / FSN So greedy?

I thought this was interesting. Taken from the getwhatipaidfor.com site.

DISH Network may advertise itself as a low price provider, but that still hasn’t stopped them from posting exceedingly high profits. As of August 2010, DISH Network is on pace to profit nearly $2 billion for the year or more than 40 percent more than they did in 2009. From January-June 2010, DISH Network generated more than $6 billion in revenue from subscribers and is on track to significantly improve on the $11.5 billion it earned from subscribers in 2009. In the second quarter of 2010, DISH Network received nearly 50 percent more in revenue from each subscriber than each such subscriber actually costs the operator. Overall in the most recent quarter, DISH Network posted a very healthy 25 percent profit margin.

Who is the Greedy one, Fox or Dish Network ? Perhaps both? :noidea:
