WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has a possible $20 million dollar payday at stake when he defends his title against Marcos Maidana on December 11 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is already sizing up Khan as the next potential opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Schaefer ideal plan would have Khan beating Maidana in December, and then facing the winner of January's Tim Bradley-Devon Alexander unification bout. If everything goes as planned, Khan would face Mayweather in the fall.
Schaefer is still interested in making the mega-fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who faces Antonio Margarito on November 13 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. If Schaefer is unable to reach a deal for Mayweather-Pacquiao by the spring, Khan will be the next option. Golden Boy promotes Khan and has a close business relationship with Mayweather.
Khan is close friends with Pacquiao and they are both trained by Freddie Roach.
‘If we can’t make Mayweather-Pacquiao in the spring it may be too late,’ said Schaefer. ‘So this gives us time to build Amir into a pay-per-view superstar in the US.’
