Trainer Robert Garcia says he will fly to San Francisco right after the Antonio Margarito fight against pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas on November 13 to begin training Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire.
Garcia told BoxingScene.com/Inquirer that Donaire’s fight with Volodymyr “Wladimir” Sidorenko on December 4 in Anaheim, California “is a tough fight so we’ll make sure we have the perfect sparring partners and once I get there for the last three weeks before the fight I’ll make sure that everything is gone right.”
The trainer and former IBF world super featherweight champion said he has been in touch with Donaire almost everyday and will be going over to San Francisco on the weekends to “check up on him. I am right now very busy with Margarito but after Margarito I will give a hundred to Domaire.”
Garcia said that they were already looking ahead to a eagerly awaited bantamweight title fight against WBC/WBO champion Fernando “Cochulito” Montiel of Mexico set for the first quarter of next year. He said “we already have the plan ready. I spoke to Donaire’s manager (Cameron Dunkin) today and he told me that it looks like the fight will be sometime in the first part of 2011.”
The trainer said “that’s great news and hopefully we can get the win against Montiel who is a helluva fighter. He looked tremendous in his last fight against (Rafael) Concepcion. He looked powerful.”
Garcia noted that these are very good fights for Donaire and a “chance for him to prove to the world that he is the best and deserves to be the No. 4 pound-for-pound fighter in the world” as ranked by Ring Magazine.
Donaire who won the WBA super flyweight interim title and relinquished it to move up to bantamweight faces a tough task against Sidorenko who has a record of 22-2-2 with 7 knockouts and is no pushover.
The Ukranian fighter won a bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games beating such vaunted fighters as Omar Narvaez of Argentina and Daniel Ponce De Leon of Mexico.
Sidorenko won the WBA bantamweight title on February 2, 2005 against Juilio Zarate but lost it to Anselmo Moreno on May 31, 2008 and dropped a split decision in a rematch on May 2, 2009. In his last fight on August 28 this year Sidorenko won a twelve round unanimous decision over Mbwana Matumla who lost by a 2nd round knockout to AJ “Bazooka” Banal on May 16, 2009 in a clash for the vacant WBC International super flyweight championship.
One of Sidorenko’s noteworthy wins was against bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko who defeated Darchinyan in an IBF title fight and although at 34 years of age he may be considered past his prime, its clear that Sidorenko has enough experience both as an amateur and as a pro to test Donaire in a fight that would be an excellent stepping stone to a showdown with Montiel.
