According to the Philippine Star, Manny Pacquiao is battling a minor illness and didn’t participate in training yesterday. Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza has been in camp with the fighter for the past few weeks and elaborated slightly on the situation.

“He was not feeling well,” Ariza would tell the Star. “It happens. But that’s just it. He was not feeling well.”

Ariza first came onto the scene after Pacquiao March 2008 rematch with Juan Manuel Marquez and has been amazed as the fighter’s work ethic and overall ability. Ariza noted that Pacquiao could return to camp shortly depending on how he feels day to day. Pacquiao also had tweaked his ankle earlier in camp while playing basketball but the injury wasn’t of great concern.

Reports would later surface that Pacquiao was the victim of a sinus infection, according to Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielz. Pacquiao is gearing up for a November 13th bout with Antonio Margarito in Arlington, Texas and has been sparring the likes of Glen Tapia and Michael Medina to prepare for the size and strength of the Tijuana fighter.

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan will also be joining camp shortly as well as undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who jokingly noted that Freddie Roach offered him $1,000 if he were to knock out Pacquiao in sparring. Khan is preparing for a December 11th clash in Las Vegas against Marcos Maidana.

Tarver at heavyweight

Throughout his career Antonio Tarver has always had a way with words and his theatrics have again been on display leading into his October 15th fight with Nagy Aguilera. Tarver hasn’t won a bout in over two years, with his last two ring outings being decision losses to Chad Dawson, and is looking to remind everyone that he has something left when he makes his heavyweight debut at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

“Why take the step up to cruiserweight when I can fight the big boys right now?,” Tarver asked. “I walk around at 225. I’ve always been a big light heavyweight and people don’t understand what it’s been like to have to make weight and be in shape at light heavyweight. I’m here to prove on Oct. 15 that the fire never left. I’m still the same fighter, a better fighter today than I ever was. I feel good because I don’t have the stress of losing 30 pounds on me. I don’t have to worry about that now.”

Tarver has never fought above 179 pounds and at age 41 he will certainly have his share of doubters. Still, the Florida native makes good points in stating that their aren’t any real American heavyweights with star appeal and if he strings off a couple of nice victories maybe something meaningful could come about. Tarver had nice power at light heavyweight and insists he will bring it up with him two divisions north.

“My punching power is going to be deceptive because they’re not going to expect it. It’s going to be the punch they don’t see with speed that’s going to get them out of there. I can crack, man. Anyone who has ever taken one of my punches knows that I can hit it and it’s natural power. It’ll be surprising to them and deceptive power.”

Kirkland returns

Undefeated junior middleweight James Kirkland captured the boxing world’s imagination for a two-year spell in which he showcased a destructive and ruthless mentality in the ring. One of the main concerns by people close to the fighter was that his habits outside of the ring would end up catching up with him and last year that definitely proved to be the case.

Kirkland turned professional in August of 2001 and would later lose 2 ½ years of his career after being on probation following his involvement in an armed robbery case. In April of last year Kirkland was arrested in Austin, Texas for possession of a firearm by a felon and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison. It was a damaging blow to a fighter with much promise but now Kirkland is fresh out of jail and set to make his return to the ring December 11th in Las Vegas on the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana undercard.

Kirkland is still only 26 years old and after he shakes off some rust he will be eyeing some big fights in 2011. The southpaw is unrelenting in the ring and makes up for his lack of finesse and skills with sheer grit and power on the inside. He holds victories over Bryan Vera, Joel Julio and Ossie Duran. He will definitely give the junior middleweight division an added boost.
