Abraham-Froch To Vie For WBC Crown

The November 27th bout between Abraham and Carl Froch will not only have a spot in the Super Six World Boxing Classic semi-finals at stake, but the pair of ex-champions wil fight for the WBC world title in the 168-pound division. The fight is to occur in Helsinki, Finland. The WBC gave Abraham and Froch the go-ahead to fight for the title vacated by the Mikkel Kessler, but switched gears and sanctioned WBA champion Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell to fight for that title. Following an appeal from Sauerland, the WBC again reversed course and agreed the new champion will be the Abraham-Froch victor.

King Arthur Abraham and Carl “The Cobra” Froch will not only be fighting for a spot in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semi-Finals when they clash in Helsinki on November 27. Following an appeal from Team Sauerland, the WBC ruled that the vacant WBC Super-Middleweight Title will also be at stake. “That is fantastic news,” King Arthur said. “It is like a dream coming true for me. Ever since I vacated my IBF Middleweight Title to battle it out with the world´s best fighters at Super-Middleweight, it has been my goal to become champion again. The moment has finally arrived. I am very excited and I cannot wait to get into the ring with Froch.”

The Super Six tournament has already seen the crowning of two new champions. In November, Andre Ward dethroned then-WBA-Titlist Mikkel Kessler. The Viking Warrior bounced back with a spectacular victory over WBC-Champion Carl Froch. When an eye injury forced Kessler to withdraw from the tournament in August, he was elevated to “Champion Emeritus” by the WBC, granting him the right to face the champion on his return. Ward and Dirrell were to fight for the vacant WBC title, but Team Sauerland successfully protested the decision, meaning that Abraham and Froch will now determine the new WBC Super-Middleweight Champion when they collide at Helsinki´s famous Hartwall Areena. “We welcome the WBC´s decision,” said Chris Meyer, General Manager of Team Sauerland. “We are very happy for King Arthur. On November 27, he will finally be world champion again.”
