WASHINGTON, D.C: Respected boxing commentator Larry Merchant thinks that three-time world welterweight champion Antonio Margarito will give world pound-for-pound champion Manny Pacquiao a tough fight in their junior middleweight title fight on November 13 at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Texas. ”Margarito has a chance,” Merchant told Michael Woods of The Sweet Science. “You can’t dismiss him. He’s about the largest welterweight I’ve ever seen.”

He said that Margarito used to be shunned by the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr. because they find him a strong and dangerous opponent.

“If you’re trying to make a case for him winning, you have to talk about his size, and the extra motivation,” added the veteran HBO boxing commentator, referring to Margarito’s chance to redeem his tarnished image arising from a hand-wrap controversy by beating Pacquiao, the acknowledged king of the ring.

Merchant said that Margarito’s aggressive, relentless attacking style could be a difficult style to overcome.

“You’re talking about a guy who, when he was on the top of his game, Floyd Mayweather Jr. didn’t want any part of. But how far he is from the top of his game can only be seen at that fight,” he added.

Merchant conceded that the considerable layoff—Margarito has fought only thrice in almost three years—could be a factor in the outcome of the Pacquiao-Margarito showdown.

“In a perverse way, maybe the punishment Margarito took against Mosley [in January 2009] and against Cotto [in July 2008], maybe what he needed, for his body as well as his mind to be restored,” he said.

Pacquio, 31, is a 5-1 betting favorite to defeat Margarito but Merchant thinks that the odds may not be very realistic.

”Manny hasn’t fought anybody as big, and relentless, as Margarito,” he pointed out.

“But [Pacquiao] has to be the favorite [because] he’s the more versatile fighter. But he’ll be pressured by something he hasn’t had to overcome before, depending on what Margarito has left,” Merchant said

Larry Merchant is one of my favs for sure,And i think he has a point here and i have been saying it all along..Margarito is a warrior till the end with a much bigger height advantage as well as reach..David vs Goliath what else can you say except there are no slingshots allowed in the ring..Apparently i'm putting my money on the underdog for this one!!Cheers>>:innocent:

Like Todd, I like Larry Merchant. And I do think that Margarito "has a chance"; so did Marquez, Dela Hoya, Hatton, Diaz, Barrera, and Morales. They all had a chance before entering the ring. I also think that this is no Clottey-punching-bag-event. Margarito will box, punch, and counter-punch. He will employ his combination and his trademark uppercut that had many of his opponents in the good old days eat the canvas. It will not be "walk in the park" for the PACMAN.

It is for that reason that the fight will be entertaining and exciting. Fans will be yelling and screaming with every punch thrown. There will be plenty. But where will those punches be coming from? That will be Margarito's headache.

David Diaz said it best, "I just did not know where the punches are coming from; they were everywhere; he was just too fast."

Someone came up with Flash Elorde's last two fights - with Carlos Ortiz. In both fights, Ortiz stopped Elorde in the 14th round preventing Elorde's bid to win Ortiz's lightweight crown. Ortiz was bigger and stronger!

There is a difference though, Elorde was a smoker and succumbed to lung cancer at the young age of 49.

Pacquiao is a health nut with a stamina of a few bulls which explains his explosive uppercut that sent Hatton into birdie land. He will be coming from all angles. Margarito will faint from just having to run around the ring to find his small opponent. Pacquaio will not need a slingshot at all.

What he would need is singing lessons. He has yet to do a better rendition of "Sometimes When We Touch" which I understand he already has arrangement to sing after the match.

Pacquaio is not unbeatable..I don't think there is a boxer that isn't..He will meet his maker sooner or later..JMO...
