MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partners are now extra-motivated in testing the Filipino after boxing coach Freddie Roach offered a $1,000 reward for the spar mate who can deck the reigning World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champ.
Up for the challenge is undefeated super welterweight contender Vanes Martirosyan who is set to fly to the Philippines to help prepare Pacquiao against Mexico’s Antonio Margarito.
"I am up for Freddie's challenge. I will be the first to drop Manny," the US-based Armenian said in a report by Boxing Scene.com.
Martirosyan said he hopes his statement won’t be taken badly. He said he only wants to test the best.
"I respect Manny a lot and I have learned a lot from him. He is a great fighter but I feel I am up to the challenge," he said. "That is why I always say I want to fight the best.
In a report by Philboxing.com’s Eddie Alinea, Roach said he wanted to spice up the sparring sessions by offering the reward. He added that this will motivate Pacquiao’s sparring partners to give the Filipino a thorough workout inside the ring.
“Yes, I am renewing my challenge to Manny’s sparring partners to make sure they will put up their best in their job to put him in top shape when the fight comes,” he said.
Other sparring mates who are in the Philippines to help train Pacquiao are (WBA) light welterweight champion Amir Khan of Britain, Glen Tapia of the US, and Michael Medina of Mexico.
This is not the first time Roach has offered a $1,000 prize for the sparring partner who can knock down Pacquiao. He also dangled a $1,000 prize when Pacquiao was preparing for his bout against boxing great Oscar de la Hoya in 2008.
