Canucks name Henrik Sedin as captain

The Vancouver Canucks named center Henrik Sedin, last season's NHL scoring leader and MVP, as the 13th captain in team history. The announcement camp just before Saturday night's season-opener against the Los Angeles Kings.

"Henrik Sedin embodies the principles of this organization and all of the qualities of a leader through his honesty, integrity and discipline," GM Mike Gillis said. "Henrik is an exemplary leader who inspires teammates with a work ethic and desire to continually evolve his game. We are proud to name him as team Captain."

Sedin will be supported by Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Kevin Bieksa and Manny Malhotra in their roles as alternate captains.

Previous Canucks captains include Orland Kurtenbach, Stan Smyl, Trevor Linden, Mark Messier, Markus Naslund -- and goaltender Roberto Luongo, who gave up the "C" during the summer.

"I am truly honored to be named Captain of the Vancouver Canucks," Sedin said in a statement. "I have great respect for the captains who led the team before me and feel privileged to know them or have played alongside them during their careers as Canucks. With the support of Daniel, Ryan, Kevin and Manny I look forward to leading this team."

Sedin enters his 10th NHL season and has played his entire career as a Canuck since being selected by Vancouver third overall in the 1999 Entry Draft. In 2009-10 Sedin enjoyed a milestone season capturing the Art Ross Trophy as the League scoring leader with 112 points (29 goals, 83 assists) and the Hart Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the NHL. Sedin became the first player in franchise history to win the NHL scoring title, setting a new club record for most points and assists recorded in one season.

Sedin ranks fourth all-time in scoring with 572 points (138 goals, 434 assists) in 728 games. His 434 assists rank first in franchise history, and his 728 career games are sixth. He has represented Sweden at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympic Games, winning gold in Turin, Italy, in 2006.

First game, Canucks lost to Kings in shootout

Associated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Daniel Sedin scored his second goal of the game with 5:08 left and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Florida Panthers 2-1 on Monday night.

Twin brother Henrik Sedin and linemate Mikael Samuelsson each had two assists, and Roberto Luongo made 41 saves as the Canucks bounced back from a shootout loss to Los Angeles in their first game on Saturday.

After opening the scoring on a short rebound in the first period, Daniel put the Canucks ahead again on a late scramble. Tomas Vokoun made an amazing headfirst dive save at one side of the net, but the puck squirted out the other side and this time it was Daniel lunging forward to knock it over the goal line.

Rostislav Olesz scored, and Vokoun finished with 33 saves for the Panthers, who opened the season with a loss in Edmonton on Sunday.

Vokoun, who only stopped 10 of 13 shots in Edmonton, had to be sharp early, stopping Kevin Bieksa on tip-in tight and Guillaume Desbiens on a breakaway in the opening 90 seconds. He made a handful of good saves in the second to keep it close, including a sliding 2-on-1 stop on Henrik Sedin, and Olesz tied it on a harmless looking play with 38 seconds left in the period.

Olesz just threw the puck at the net from the high sideboards and it went off a pair of Canucks - first the stick of Samuelsson and then the skate of Alex Edler - and past a surprised Luongo.

Luongo kept it tied with a sprawling left pad save off Shawn Matthias from the slot with 7:30 left, and made a nice pokecheck on David Booth in tight in the final minutes to preserve the win.

The Canucks didn't have a power play, while the Panthers were 0 for 3.

Notes: Canucks C Alex Bolduc sprained his ankle in the first game and was replaced on the fourth line by Jeff Tambellini, the son of Edmonton GM Steve Tambellini. Panthers LW Darcy Hordichuk played against his old team just five days after being traded away by the Canucks, but the tough guy hasn't even been to Florida yet. He joined the team in Edmonton for the first game Sunday. It was also the first game against their old teams for Canucks D Keith Ballard and Florida RW Steve Bernier, who were part of a five-player trade in June.

They need to send LUANGO to the Manitoba Moose because he is far from worthy of even being in the NHL and leave Cory Schneider in net!

He's breathing a sigh of relief...lol...Takes that penalty..sits white knuckled for 2 mins...then jumps on and scores....With that kind of extreme highs and lows... (scores 1st goal)...Exreme low as Hawks tie it and he takes a penalty in OT...Then super high as he scores series winning goal....That boy is going to need some serious therapy...lol...I have to admit when Toews scored that tying goal I thought for sure it was all she wrote...That game should have been a blowout if not for Hawks rookie goalie...I couldn't believe some of those stops...man-o-man....

I wish they can do it ,the way I look at it ,we only only 6 teams on the nhl,and the rest all based on usa,is like David and Goliath and for a canadian team to have make it that far out of 26 based in the usa and 6 in canada, speaks by itself,we deserve to be more proud of the number we have representing the sport and now in the finals I would say here is a wave to them go canucks go,lets show the rest of the nhl what we are made of,lol, beside most of the players playing accross the border are made in canada.
