One of the few things I do as soon as I get up in the morning are (1) check my emails and (2) see what is going on in the BOXING forum.
Just because ESPN, HBO and SHOWTIME choose not to highlight or broadcast any boxing event for a month and a half does not mean that boxing aficionados like us should be staying away.
After all there is CLASSIC BOXING...and then there is UFC/MMA which I am sure many of you folks also follow.
Well, I watched a replay of a fight between Acelino Freitas and Kotey in 2001 when Freitas still had a 29-0-29 record. It went on for 12 rounds - first time POPO had to go the distance. I kept wondering whatever happened to a boxer who was so devastating in his early career. He was definitely impressive then and could have been a superstar under the right management and circumstances. A loss to Diego Corrales in 2004 and Juan Diaz in 2007 ended his career. Many believed that his heart was not in boxing but rather in soccer. Shame,
Last night, TOMASZ ADAMEK made a statement overwhelming a TRUE heavyweight - ESTRADA, a former olympian. Although he did not knock him out, ADAMEK removed any doubts that he belongs. A bout against David Haye would certainly be interesting.
And what about that CAIN VELASQUEZ? Isn't he an animal?
Wake up guys, Nov 13 is just 3 weeks away.

I did watch cain velasquez put a beating on brock lesnar.Wow I was impressed. He patiently worked him instead of going desperate with wild shots and tiring out as they usually do againts a big figther.I would of liked to have seen the adamek fight. This guy will stand in there and fight with the big guys So bring on david haye.I know nov 13 is around the corner but also nov 6 the juanma vs marquez fight is on.You dont want to miss that.

Ah, yes, you are right! I anticipate a great battle there. I think, however, that at 35 years old, Rafael Marquez would have to dig deep to overcome a powerful Lopez. Some say that Lopez stamina is questionable as demonstrated when he fought Roger Mtagwa. He ran out of gas in the 11th and 12th round and some speculated that he could have lost that fight had there been a 13th round. Marquez could make it interesting if he could survive 8 rounds and take it to the end BUT that may not happen. Still it is seen as a "mini-mega" fight.
Adamek was quick with combinations throwing 3 and 4 at a time. It is what gave him the fight. Estrada is strong. He took some real hard body shots and right straight on the chin but he kept on stalking, He lost by UD.
On Cain Velasquez, I think he will rule the UFC heavyweight division for a little while until Brock recovers and go for a big rematch - UFC 130!!!

Hooray! We got Bolivia out of his cave (hibernating)!!!!
The problem with UFC is that it could be explosive and over in less than 3 minutes. That is what happened to Brock Lesnar - gone in less than 180 seconds!
In boxing, it is more multi-dimensional and tactical with fighters sizing up each other looking for weaknesses and opportunities (except with beasts like Tyson). There is a lot more suspense and intrigue. I like UFC but it is nothing like boxing!

I agree Aqua that ufc is nothing like boxing but I consider it to be the next best thing to watch when no fights are on.After watching the cain fight I am now a fan.

Well, like it or not, UFC/MMA fights are drawing sell-out crowds in their presentations. It is a growing phenomenon that seems to satisfy craving for extreme cruelty. Look at every UFC (next one 122) fight and the arena. It is a mind-boggling reality. Then there are umpteen number of weekly coverages. Boxing, on the other hand, is slowly regressing - at least in North America.
Cain Velasquez or Brock Lesnar are probably well known in Detroit or California but Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko or Manny Pacquiao have millions of followers all over the world. What I am saying is that in terms of the sport's popularity, Boxing is still way ahead of extreme sports internationally. (Someone may debate me on that issue but that is OK.)
I got to admit that while I am a big fan of boxing, I am entertained by the likes of George St. Pierre, Diego Sanchez, Anderson Silva, and several of those Brazilian fighters. And then of course, there are the lady UFC fighters like Gina Carano, Kira Gracie, Megumi Fujii, and Erin Toughill. They are incredibly tough but sexy and fun to watch.
But I bet you would turn off your set or watch a re-run of Gilligan's Island instead, huh, Todd?
