Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez

(WBO featherweight championship)

Super Six World Boxing Classic: Glen Johnson vs. Allan Green

(super middleweight)

Puerto Rican superstar and WBO featherweight world champ Juan Manuel Lopez and Mexican legend and future Hall of Famer Rafael Marquez will fight on Saturday, Nov. 6, LIVE on SHOWTIME from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

One of boxing’s fastest rising stars, Lopez (29-0, 26 KOs), of Caguas, Puerto Rico, will attempt to make the third defense of his WBO crown. The 27-year-old champion has registered an astounding 26 knockouts in 29 professional fights. The power-punching southpaw will now face the toughest and most important test of his career in Marquez, a battle-tested great with a relentless desire to win at all costs.

Marquez (39-5, 35 KOs), of México City, a former IBF bantamweight (118) champion, cemented himself in boxing lore when he moved up to 122 pounds to take on Israel Vazquez in what became an unforgettable four-fight series that saw each warrior win a pair of battles. The 35-year-old is coming off a third-round knockout of Vazquez in the final installment of the series in only his second fight at featherweight (126). Now, he’ll take on the younger Lopez at 126 pounds in a quest for a world title in his third division.

In the co-feature, world-ranked contender Allan Green will face veteran contender and former world champ Glen Johnson in a must-win Super Six World Boxing Classic bout. The winner of the 12-rounder will earn a spot in the tournament Semifinals.

The proposed Super Six World Boxing Classic fight between Allan Green and Glen Johnson is official for the November 6 undercard on Showtime. Main eventing that night will be featherweights Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez.

Green (29-2, 20 KO) entered the tournament as a replacement for Jermain Taylor in June, losing a virtual shutout decision to Andre Ward in Oakland. Green was sluggish the entire fight, clearly outclassed by Ward, and complained after of weight issues and overtraining for the bout.

Now he faces Johnson (50-14-2, 34 KO), a 41-year-old veteran who has not made the super middleweight limit in a decade. Johnson is the former world light heavyweight champion and a multiple-time titlist at 175. There are concerns about his ability to boil down to 168, or if he’ll be effective when he does. At his age, fighters almost never go down in weight. In recent years, we’ve seen disastrous results for the likes of Oscar de la Hoya and Chris Byrd when attempting at an advanced age to move back down in weight, and Johnson is older than either of them were, with many more miles on the odometer.

Bob Arum said Top Rank’s fight card featuring Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Rafael Marquez “got bigger and more complete” with the addition of the big Super Six fight matching Alan Green vs Glen Johnson on November 6 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

“I want to thank Lou DiBella and Showtime for adding such a splendid fight,” Arum said. “This will insure that the television audience and the fans purchasing tickets at the MGM will get a full, complete and outstanding night of boxing.”

DiBella said “…with Mikkel Kessler falling, Showtime could not have created a more compelling match-up for Allan Green. Allan has been working for months to reflect his true ability. Glen Johnson is already poised to make 168 pounds and there are very few men more worthy of this opportunity in all of boxing than the Road Warrior. It will be an exciting opening to an outstanding main event.”
