I have a 10 foot bud in my yard hasn't been used in years. You can't get anything at all with the old c band receivers correct so should they just be thrown out? I also have a couple VC2 board and one of he old black VC1's is any of that usable anymore?
If I was to fire up my bud what digital receiver would I need to get? I heard 4dtv by Motorola is going out. Is there much up there free anymore that would make it worth while lining up my old bud and getting a digital receiver? I do not have a ku feedhorn on it, if I got one what would be the benefits of that?

Your current FTA receiver when used with a V or G box (to run the linear motor on the BUD) will pick up the "C" band sats just fine.
You may need a new LNB.

Hmm, I do a sonicview 360 elite is that capable of moving the dish with the motor box? This thing is out of line and not knowing if the lnb will pick up digital or not it would probably be a nightmare for me to get it running. I know it's old I bought this in like 1992.

The old BUD receiver should be able to move the dish, you just need to change your satellite settings in the SV 360 to be used with "C" band, the LNB frequency should be 5150 then all you need to do is find a "C" band satellite.
Hopfully the LNB will still work.
Depending on the age, you probably have an analog LNB. I like the new C/Ku LNBF's. There are only about a dozen analog channels left.
I have my systems like Terry first mentioned.
My Coolsats are hooked up to a VBox & it moves this dish by DiSEqC 1.2
I have well over 300 100% Free channels.
If the mesh on your dish is too large it won't pick up Ku well.
Do you know what brand it is?
You are probably talking $100 -$150 to get it going & you will have lots of free TV for many years.

I'm using an azbox ultra hd receiver with my bud and I can verify that I have approximately 1,200 open channels on both c and ku band. As Terry mentioned, your old ird will be able to move your dish and as Gold mentioned a c/ku lnbf would be recommended.

I'm using a Coolsat 8000 and Pansat 3500 with mine, hopefully I'll upgrade to an AZbox after christmas... Your SV360 will work just fine, and until you get a Gbox you can use the old receiver to move the dish, and until you upgrade to an LNBF you'll need the old receiver to flip polarity as well.

A LNBF and a V-box are great ideas. I'm glad I switched over. Like everyone else has been mentioning, you can get by with no problems using your old analog receiver to move the dish and change your polarity. There are a lot of free channels on C-band, so you don't need to rush into changing your LNB, unless it won't work. Have fun experimenting, it's still a great hobby.
